PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Crest of the Cretaceous captures a Parasaurolophus beside a shallow woodland pool, its long-crested head lowered towards a dragonfly hovering above the water. One dark eye follows the tiny visitor, creating an intimate encounter between two vastly different inhabitants of the prehistoric landscape.
Warm sunlight filters between the trees and catches the animal's patterned hide, revealing bands and irregular markings across its muscular body. Its extraordinary tubular crest rises from the skull and sweeps backwards, immediately distinguishing the gentle herbivore from the surrounding vegetation. One forelimb is held slightly above the ground while the powerful hind limbs support its weight at the muddy water's edge.
Ferns, grasses and dense foliage enclose the clearing, their reflections mingling with that of the dinosaur across the still surface of the pool. The small dragonfly provides a delicate counterpoint to the much larger animal investigating it.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Parasaurolophus (Parasaurolophus walkeri) lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, around 76–75 million years ago, in what is now North America. Fossils of P. walkeri are particularly associated with the Dinosaur Park Formation of Alberta, Canada, an environment that once contained rivers, floodplains, forests and wetlands supporting an exceptionally diverse dinosaur community.
Parasaurolophus belonged to the hadrosaurids, popularly called duck-billed dinosaurs. It was a large herbivore, reaching roughly 9–10 metres in length, and could move on both two and four legs. Its broad beak gathered vegetation, while groupings of hundreds of tightly packed teeth processed plant material farther back in the jaws.
Its most extraordinary feature was the long, hollow crest extending backwards from the skull. Inside it, passages connected with the respiratory system travelled through the crest before looping back towards the head. This remarkable anatomy has led scientists to investigate whether the structure functioned partly as a resonating chamber for sound.
Computer modelling of preserved crest anatomy suggests that Parasaurolophus could have produced powerful, low-frequency calls. Such sounds may have travelled considerable distances and could potentially have been used for communication between individuals. The crest was also visually conspicuous, so recognition and display were probably important parts of its function as well.
Parasaurolophus shared its world with numerous other dinosaurs, including horned dinosaurs, armoured ankylosaurs, other hadrosaurs and large predatory theropods. Dragonflies and their relatives were already ancient by this time, their evolutionary history stretches back hundreds of millions of years before Parasaurolophus appeared.
