PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Catching the Rain captures a young chimpanzee seated beneath the dense canopy of a tropical African forest as a shower passes through the trees. Sheltered beside the broad trunk of an old tree, the youngster raises one open hand into the falling water, turning its face upwards as droplets gather across its palm and stream from its fingers.
Rain has darkened the chimpanzee's coat, separating the fine hairs into damp strands across its head, shoulders and arms. Its other hand rests loosely against its body while bare feet settle amongst saturated leaves and shallow water on the forest floor. The raised arm, open fingers and upward gaze give the youngster's attention entirely to the sensation above.
Around it, twisting vines descend across moss-covered bark and glossy foliage gleams beneath a coating of fresh rain. Droplets fall from leaves and fingertips alike, catching shafts of warm light penetrating the canopy and briefly flashing against the shadowed forest beyond.
There is no shelter being sought and nothing being gathered. For a moment, the rain itself has become the object of fascination: cool water arriving from somewhere overhead, caught for an instant in a small outstretched hand.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) inhabits environments where rainfall can be an important and sometimes dramatic part of daily life. Across the species' equatorial African range, chimpanzees occupy habitats ranging from humid rainforest to woodland and forest-savanna mosaics, experiencing very different seasonal patterns of rain.
For a young chimpanzee, rainfall changes the forest in ways that can be immediately sensed. Water strikes the skin and hair, collects on vegetation, runs across branches and forms temporary pools on the ground. The sounds, smells and textures of the surroundings alter with it, creating abundant opportunities for sensory exploration.
Touch is particularly important to primates. The hairless palms and fingers of chimpanzees contain sensitive skin capable of providing detailed information about surfaces, temperature, pressure and movement. Combined with highly mobile hands and individually controlled digits, this sensitivity allows youngsters to investigate their environment through direct physical contact.
Chimpanzees also display considerable behavioural flexibility around water and weather. Individuals may seek shelter during heavy rain, remain exposed to it, move through wet vegetation or interact with water encountered in streams and pools. Responses vary with circumstances and individual experience.
The raised palm in this artwork therefore represents one of the simplest forms of discovery. Before water becomes something to drink, cross or manipulate, it can simply be something to feel, a changing forest experienced through the fingertips.

Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes)
Rainfall helps shape the changing availability of food throughout chimpanzee habitats, but its effects differ considerably from one landscape to another. Chimpanzees are strongly reliant on fruit, supplementing it with leaves, stems, flowers and other foods as seasonal conditions change. In some forests, greater rainfall is associated with increased fruit production, while elsewhere important fruits peak during drier periods. Chimpanzees respond to these local cycles by altering what they eat and where they forage, demonstrating considerable ecological flexibility.
This adaptability makes the preservation of diverse, intact habitats particularly important. A forest containing many tree, vine and understory species is more likely to provide alternative foods when a preferred resource becomes scarce. Research across chimpanzee populations has shown that figs, leaves, terrestrial vegetation and other resources can help sustain communities through periods of reduced fruit availability. Protecting botanical diversity therefore gives chimpanzees more options for responding to seasonal fluctuations and increasingly unpredictable environmental conditions.
