PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Catching Snowflakes captures a young polar bear cub sitting amongst the soft drifts of the Arctic as snow begins to fall around it. With its head tilted upwards and dark eyes fixed on the sky, the youngster appears completely absorbed by the tiny flakes descending through the still winter air.
Fine snow settles across the cub's dense cream-white coat, gathering lightly around its ears, shoulders and chest. Its black nose and expressive eyes stand in gentle contrast against the surrounding whites, while the softly textured fur creates a warm, almost woolly appearance against the frozen landscape. Behind, rolling banks of snow dissolve into cool blue-grey shadows beneath a pale, luminous sky.
The close composition brings the viewer down into the cub's small world, where an immense Arctic landscape momentarily gives way to something much simpler: a little bear, a quiet snowfall and whatever has captured its attention overhead.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
A young Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) is remarkably well equipped for a childhood spent amongst snow and ice. Although its coat appears brilliant white, individual polar bear hairs contain little or no pigment and are essentially transparent. Light scattering through the dense coat creates the pale appearance that helps the animal blend into its snowy surroundings.
Beneath the longer protective guard hairs lies a thick undercoat that traps insulating air close to the body. Polar bears also have black skin beneath their fur, while a developing layer of body fat provides additional insulation. Cubs are not born with the formidable cold-weather protection of a fully grown bear, however. They gain size, fur and fat rapidly while nourished by their mother's exceptionally rich milk.
Snow itself is more than simply part of the scenery. Its trapped air can make it an effective insulator, creating sheltered spaces considerably less exposed than the open Arctic air. For a growing cub, fur, body fat, shelter and behaviour all work together to make life possible in a world shaped by winter.

Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus)
A Polar Bear cub's ability to withstand Arctic cold changes extraordinarily quickly during its first months. Newborn cubs are tiny, helpless and poorly insulated, relying upon their mother's warmth and the protected microclimate of the snow den. By the time a family emerges in spring, however, a cub may weigh around 10 kilograms and possess a well-developed insulating coat, despite still having very little subcutaneous fat. Research has shown that this dense fur, combined with a high metabolic rate fuelled by the mother's exceptionally rich milk, allows young cubs to tolerate remarkably low air temperatures.
This transformation is essential because leaving the maternity den exposes cubs to an environment dramatically harsher than the sheltered world in which they were born. Families usually remain near the den for a period after emergence, allowing youngsters to explore, strengthen their legs and acclimatise before travelling toward the sea ice. Even then, their cold-weather adaptations have limits, young cubs are much less capable of coping with prolonged immersion in icy water than with freezing air. Their survival therefore depends not only upon insulation, but upon maternal care and a gradual introduction to the demanding conditions of Arctic life.
