PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Breaking Through captures the fragile beginning of life as a group of newly hatched pterosaurs emerge among a clutch of eggs on the sheltered forest floor. Warm sunlight filters through the vegetation above, illuminating broken shells, delicate skin and the tiny bodies gathering themselves within the nest.
One hatchling has already escaped its shell and stands unsteadily beside the clutch, its mouth open and its undeveloped wings held away from its body. Nearby, another remains seated within the fractured remains of its egg, while a third peers through a widening break in the shell behind it. Several intact eggs suggest that the process of hatching is still underway.
The young animals appear strikingly different from the imposing aerial forms they may eventually become. Their oversized eyes, slight bodies and folded wing membranes emphasise their vulnerability, while scattered leaves, bark, moss and fern growth make the nesting site feel enclosed and protected.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Pteranodon (Pteranodon sp.) lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, roughly 86–84 million years ago, and is known particularly from deposits associated with the ancient Western Interior Seaway of North America. This vast inland sea once divided much of the continent, providing the marine environment over which these large pterosaurs flew and fed.
Although Pteranodon is one of the most familiar prehistoric flying animals, no confirmed Pteranodon eggs or embryos have yet been discovered. Our understanding of how its young began life therefore comes largely from fossils of other pterosaurs. Exceptionally preserved pterosaur eggs and embryos discovered elsewhere have transformed scientific ideas about their reproduction.
Unlike the rigid, heavily calcified eggs of many modern birds, known pterosaur eggs generally appear to have possessed relatively thin, sometimes flexible shells. Fossil nesting assemblages also suggest that at least some pterosaurs laid eggs in groups or returned repeatedly to favourable nesting areas, although these discoveries should not automatically be assumed to represent Pteranodon's own behaviour.
Perhaps most intriguing is what happened after hatching. Studies of embryonic and very young pterosaurs show that their wings were already remarkably well developed. This has led some researchers to propose that certain young pterosaurs may have been capable of flight very soon after hatching, potentially far earlier than most modern birds. How much parental care they received remains uncertain and may have differed among species.
The hatchlings in the artwork therefore represent something palaeontology can only partly reconstruct. We know that Pteranodon reproduced by laying eggs because pterosaurs as a group were egg-laying reptiles, but the appearance of its nest, the number of eggs in a clutch and the behaviour of its newborn young remain unknown.
That uncertainty is itself part of the Lost World story: fossils can reveal extraordinary details about animals extinct for tens of millions of years, while still leaving some of their most intimate moments hidden from us.
