PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Branching Out captures four young capuchin monkeys turning a single forest branch into their own little world of climbing, balancing and exploration. High amongst the green canopy, each youngster has found a different position: one perches securely above the branch, another hangs upside down beneath it, while two companions dangle from their hands with legs and tails suspended in the open air.
Their tiny fingers curl firmly around the bark as they negotiate the branch from every possible angle. Long juvenile limbs and curling tails create a lively arrangement of shapes, while their pale faces and dark coats stand clearly against the surrounding foliage.
Behind them, sunlight filters through layers of broad tropical leaves, breaking into soft points of green and gold throughout the forest. The four youngsters appear entirely at home above the ground, transforming an ordinary branch into a place for movement, experimentation and play.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Capuchin Monkey (Cebus sp.) For a young capuchin monkey, learning to move confidently through the trees is an essential part of growing up. Infants begin life travelling primarily on their mother's body, but increasing independence brings opportunities to climb, balance, leap and hang for themselves.
These early attempts help develop the strength, coordination and judgement required for life above the forest floor. Capuchins have grasping hands and feet that allow them to secure themselves around branches, while their flexible limbs provide an impressive range of movement. Youngsters practise repeatedly, sometimes adopting seemingly precarious positions as they explore what their developing bodies can do.
Their long tails provide additional balance as they climb, although capuchin tails differ from the highly specialised prehensile tails of some other New World monkeys and should not be thought of simply as an extra hand. With experience, hesitant early movements become increasingly controlled and confident. Juvenile climbing and energetic play therefore serve a serious developmental purpose, preparing young capuchins to travel through the complex three-dimensional environment of the tropical forest.

Life in the forest canopy demands an extraordinary combination of balance, strength and judgement, and young capuchins begin developing these abilities remarkably early. As infants become increasingly independent, climbing, hanging, leaping and playful movement provide opportunities to refine the motor skills needed to travel safely through branches of different sizes and orientations. Research on white-faced capuchins found that youngsters were already using many adult-like patterns of locomotion by around six months of age.
Play is an important part of this development. Juvenile capuchins engage in both social and arboreal play, including chasing, climbing and acrobatic movements, behaviours thought to provide valuable practice for later life. Preserving structurally complex forest therefore protects more than food and shelter: branches, vines and interconnected tree crowns form the physical environment in which young monkeys develop the skills required to forage, escape danger and eventually travel independently through the canopy.
