PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Born for the Water presents a young Common Hippopotamus emerging almost directly towards the viewer from a shallow expanse of water. Seen from an unusually low perspective, the calf's broad head fills the centre of the composition while the surrounding surface erupts into suspended droplets of golden light.
The youngster's rounded ears extend from either side of the crown, framed by arcs of water thrown outward in near symmetry. Small dark eyes sit high upon the head above a broad muzzle, while the raised nostrils occupy the upper surface of the snout. Fine folds and subtle variations across the wet skin give definition to the cheeks, eyelids and heavy lower jaw.
Only the uppermost portion of the calf's body remains visible above the waterline. Its smooth, glistening skin shifts from deep brown-grey across the crown and muzzle to warmer pink-brown tones around the eyes, ears and neck.
Behind the animal, the surroundings dissolve into rich amber light. Hundreds of illuminated droplets hang momentarily against the softly blurred background, while reflections ripple across the water in the foreground. The close perspective transforms a simple moment of movement into an intimate study of an animal already profoundly connected to its aquatic environment.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Common Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius).
A hippopotamus spends much of its life with almost everything hidden beneath the water. What remains visible reveals one of the most distinctive arrangements of sensory organs among large land mammals.
The eyes, ears and nostrils are positioned high on the head, allowing a hippopotamus to remain largely submerged while continuing to see, hear and breathe above the surface. When it disappears completely underwater, muscular valves close the nostrils and ears. Hippos can remain submerged for several minutes before resurfacing to breathe, and they can even perform this breathing cycle while sleeping.
Water is also essential for protecting their skin. Despite their formidable appearance, hippos possess relatively sparse body hair and skin vulnerable to dehydration and prolonged solar exposure. They therefore commonly spend the heat of the day resting in rivers, lakes and pools before emerging, often after sunset, to graze on land.
Their skin produces distinctive secretions that initially appear colourless before developing reddish-orange and brown pigments. These substances have antimicrobial properties and can absorb some ultraviolet radiation, although they do not replace the animal's dependence upon water and shade.
Young calves enter this aquatic existence remarkably early. They can nurse underwater and remain close to their mothers both in the water and on land.
The hippopotamus is therefore not simply a land mammal that enjoys swimming. Its entire daily rhythm is shaped by life between water and shore.

Common Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius)
hippopotamus calf enters life already equipped for an unusually aquatic childhood. Females usually separate from the herd around the time of birth, and calves may be born in shallow water or on land. When underwater, even very young calves instinctively close their nostrils and fold their ears back, allowing them to submerge safely. They must nevertheless surface frequently for air, making the first days of life an intensive period of adapting to the boundary between water and land.
That aquatic adaptation extends to feeding. Hippo calves are capable of suckling underwater, gripping the mother's teat while their nostrils and ears remain closed, before resurfacing to breathe. Mothers and newborns initially maintain a particularly close relationship, and females can be strongly protective while their calves are small. Safeguarding quiet, shallow nursery areas within healthy rivers and wetlands therefore protects habitat used during one of the most vulnerable stages of the hippopotamus life cycle.
