PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Beneath the Brambles captures a young European Hedgehog tucked into the damp shelter of the woodland floor beneath an arching blackberry bramble. Its small body rests among cushions of deep green moss, the pale tips of its developing spines standing sharply against the darker vegetation surrounding it.
Above, thorn-covered canes curve naturally across the composition, carrying clusters of glossy blackberries at different stages of ripeness. Droplets of water cling to the fruit, serrated leaves and slender stems, suggesting the quiet aftermath of recent rain. The hedgehog peers outward from beneath this tangled canopy, its dark eyes, wet nose and tiny folded paws emerging from the protective mass of spines.
Muted woodland light filters through the foliage beyond, illuminating individual droplets and catching the fine textures of moss, fur and vegetation without disturbing the sheltered atmosphere below. Fallen leaves and small branches complete the damp forest floor, while the bramble forms a natural enclosure around the youngster. Almost concealed within its surroundings, the little hedgehog appears momentarily still within a landscape of thorns, fruit and rain-darkened green.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The European Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) beginning to move independently through its surroundings, dense vegetation can provide both a hunting ground and an important network of shelter. Bramble thickets, hedgerows, scrub and overgrown margins create precisely the kind of structurally complex habitat in which a small hedgehog can travel while remaining partially concealed.
Although blackberries and other fallen fruits may occasionally be eaten, the greater value of bramble habitat lies in what gathers beneath it. Moist soil, accumulated leaves and decaying vegetation support beetles, caterpillars, earthworms and other invertebrates that form much of the hedgehog's natural diet. Dense growth also provides cover from exposed ground and can offer protected places in which to rest during daylight hours.
Juveniles gradually expand their movements as they become independent, learning where food and suitable shelter can be found within the landscape. This makes connected areas of vegetation particularly valuable. Hedgerows and rough garden boundaries can function as passageways between feeding and resting areas, while gaps beneath fences allow hedgehogs to move without crossing more exposed routes.
For a small animal travelling largely under the cover of darkness, the tangled, seemingly untidy places at ground level can therefore form some of the most useful parts of its world.

European Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus)
Dense brambles and hedgerows provide European Hedgehogs with far more than simple cover. Studies of daytime nests have found that hedgehogs frequently choose thorny or stinging vegetation, including bramble, hawthorn, holly and nettles, where the tangled structure creates sheltered places for resting and nesting. Fallen leaves are commonly gathered into these protected spaces to construct nests, while the surrounding vegetation also supports many of the invertebrates on which hedgehogs feed. Preserving scrub, hedgerows and naturally untidy patches can therefore provide several essential resources within the same small area.
These linear habitats have another important function: they help hedgehogs move through the landscape. Hedgerows, field margins and connected green spaces can act as corridors between feeding, nesting and breeding areas, while large roads, intensive land use and the removal of boundary vegetation can make those journeys more difficult or dangerous. Conservation measures that retain robust hedges, vegetated margins and links between suitable habitat help maintain the movement opportunities upon which local populations depend.
