PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Beneath Her Watch captures a young giraffe sleeping peacefully among wildflowers beneath the towering presence of its mother. Curled upon the grass with its long legs folded close to its body, the calf rests between the adult giraffe's legs, transforming her immense stature into a natural shelter around the smaller animal. Only the mother's legs and dark tail enter the composition, allowing the sleeping calf to remain the quiet centre of the scene.
Warm sunset light passes through the meadow from the distant horizon, outlining the adult's legs in gold and illuminating the calf's patterned coat. White daisies and scattered yellow and violet flowers rise through the surrounding grasses, their delicate forms contrasting with the scale and strength of the giraffe above. Beyond them, low hills and a solitary acacia soften into the evening light. The close perspective creates a deeply intimate study of rest and protection, capturing the vulnerability of infancy beneath the reassuring presence of an attentive mother.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) calf enters a world in which its mother provides both nourishment and an important first line of defence. Although newborn giraffes are remarkably mobile and can stand within a short time of birth, young calves remain vulnerable to predators, particularly during their earliest months. Their mothers consequently maintain a close awareness of both their offspring and the surrounding landscape.
Rest is an important part of early life. Young giraffes spend considerably more time lying down than adults, folding their long limbs beneath or alongside the body while sleeping or resting. During these periods, the mother may remain nearby, her exceptional height providing a considerable advantage when surveying the surrounding country for potential danger.
Female giraffes may also share aspects of calf supervision. In some populations, youngsters gather in temporary nursery groups, sometimes described as crèches, while mothers forage nearby. These flexible arrangements allow calves to rest and interact with one another while adults remain within the wider area. Long before a calf possesses the size and experience of an adult, maternal vigilance and social association help protect it through one of the most vulnerable stages of its life.

Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis)
A giraffe calf's long legs may allow it to stand and walk remarkably soon after birth, but mobility does not mean independence. For much of its first year, the calf remains closely associated with its mother, nursing for many months while gradually incorporating increasing amounts of vegetation into its diet. Mothers are highly attentive to potential danger, positioning themselves near young calves and using their exceptional height and vision to scan across the surrounding landscape. When threatened by predators such as lions, hyenas or leopards, an adult giraffe can defend a calf with powerful kicks capable of making an attack extremely dangerous.
Giraffe mothers also participate in a more flexible form of communal childcare. Calves may gather into nursery groups, or crèches, while some females move away to forage and others remain nearby. Research into giraffe social organisation has revealed that their relationships are considerably more complex than the loose, random associations once assumed: females can maintain long-term social bonds, and these networks may influence survival and reproductive success. Conservation therefore involves protecting not simply a certain number of individual giraffes, but populations large and connected enough for these maternal relationships and social structures to persist across generations.
