PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Behind the Old Wheel captures a young raccoon peering through the hub of a weathered wooden wheel propped against an old timber wall. Framed almost perfectly within the circular opening, the youngster rests its small forepaws upon the worn wooden rim, its dark eyes meeting the viewer from beneath the unmistakable black mask of its face.
The faded wheel dominates the composition, its cracked spokes and deeply textured timber forming a rustic frame around the raccoon's soft grey-brown coat. Behind it, vertical boards darkened with age create a warm, subdued backdrop, allowing the animal's pale facial markings and delicate paws to emerge clearly from the shadows.
Ivy winds between the wheel and wall, while tiny daisies and scattered wildflowers grow around its base, softening the weathered wood with touches of green and white. Part concealed and part revealed, the young raccoon appears to have discovered the abandoned wheel during an afternoon exploration, transforming its empty hub into the perfect place from which to investigate the world beyond.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Common Raccoon (Procyon lotor) possesses some of the most remarkably sensitive and dexterous forepaws among carnivorous mammals. Each front foot carries five long, mobile digits, giving the raccoon an almost hand-like ability to grasp, turn and investigate objects. Rather than relying upon sight alone, raccoons gather an extraordinary amount of information about their surroundings through touch.
Their forepaws contain a dense concentration of sensory receptors, and tactile sensitivity becomes especially valuable when the animals forage at night or search beneath water, inside crevices and among vegetation. Wetting the paws can heighten the responsiveness of the skin, helping explain the familiar behaviour that has sometimes been mistaken for deliberately “washing” food.
Young raccoons develop these abilities through persistent exploration and play. They climb, reach into openings, manipulate unfamiliar objects and investigate almost anything accessible to their paws. This combination of dexterity, curiosity and behavioural flexibility later helps them exploit an exceptionally varied diet and a remarkable range of habitats. For a growing raccoon, touching the world is one of the principal ways of learning how it works.

Common Raccoon (Procyon lotor)
For a young raccoon, a secure hiding place can be an important part of its first months of life. Females commonly raise their kits in sheltered dens, with tree cavities particularly important as maternal den sites in many forested landscapes. Hollow logs, rock crevices and underground burrows may also be used, while raccoons living near people readily adapt to barns, sheds, chimneys and other artificial structures. Kits remain inside the den during their earliest weeks before gradually beginning to explore and forage alongside their mother.
The availability of natural cavities can depend heavily on the age and structure of a forest. Research has found raccoons selecting larger trees for dens, because mature trees are more likely to contain the substantial hollows needed for shelter and raising young. Removing old and cavity-bearing trees without allowing replacements to develop can therefore reduce suitable maternal denning habitat even for an otherwise highly adaptable species. Retaining mature trees, hollow logs and structurally diverse woodland helps preserve these natural refuges for raccoons as well as the many other animals that depend upon cavities.
