PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
At Your Pace captures an unexpected meeting between a young Black Rhinoceros and a Leopard Tortoise on a dusty track across the African savanna. The rhinoceros calf approaches from behind with one forefoot lifted in mid-step, its attention seemingly fixed upon the much smaller animal travelling steadily ahead.
Warm light falls across the calf's rounded body, revealing the folds and fine textures of its grey skin and the small horn beginning to develop above its muzzle. Its upright ears and forward gaze lend the youngster an unmistakable sense of curiosity, while the raised foot introduces a gentle feeling of movement.
Ahead, the tortoise continues across the open ground on sturdy, scaled legs. Its high-domed shell is patterned with the contrasting dark and golden markings characteristic of the species, creating a richly detailed focal point against the pale earth.
Beyond the pair, tall tawny grasses and scattered acacia trees dissolve softly into the distance. The immense savanna is reduced to a quiet encounter between two animals moving through it at very different speeds: one young and inquisitive, the other deliberate and unhurried.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) calf spends its early years close to its mother, but dependence does not mean inactivity. Young rhinos can be energetic and inquisitive, investigating unfamiliar objects and occasionally engaging in playful running, mock charging and other movements that differ noticeably from the more measured behaviour of adults.
Play has an important developmental role in many young mammals. For a growing rhinoceros, bursts of movement provide opportunities to practise balance, turning, acceleration and control of a body that will eventually become enormously powerful. Exploratory behaviour also allows the calf to encounter unfamiliar sights, smells and animals while the security of its mother remains nearby.
As its confidence increases, the youngster gradually learns which features of its surroundings deserve attention and which can simply be passed by. Not every investigation has an obvious reward; curiosity itself provides experience.
A Leopard Tortoise (Stigmochelys pardalis) would make a particularly unfamiliar-looking neighbour. The species occurs widely across eastern and southern African savannas and grasslands, overlapping parts of the Black Rhinoceros's range. Its domed shell and slow, deliberate movement present a striking contrast to an energetic rhino calf.
An encounter between the two need carry no special ecological relationship. For the youngster, it is simply another small discovery within an increasingly familiar world, one more shape, movement and scent encountered while learning what belongs in the landscape around it.

Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis)
Some of the most successful black rhinoceros conservation takes place beyond the boundaries of traditional national parks. In Namibia, communal conservancies give local communities an active role in managing wildlife on the lands where they live. Community-employed rhino rangers track and monitor individual animals, record their movements and maintain a regular presence across enormous landscapes, making local knowledge and participation an important part of rhino protection.
Conservation can become even stronger when living alongside rhinos also brings tangible benefits to those communities. Carefully managed rhino tourism can generate employment and income while helping finance monitoring and protection, creating a direct connection between healthy rhino populations and local livelihoods. Long-term work in north-western Namibia has shown how this combination of community stewardship, tourism and locally led protection can contribute to reducing illegal hunting while allowing black rhinos to remain free-ranging across communal land.
