PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Arctic Afterglow captures a young polar bear cub sitting quietly upon the frozen Arctic as evening colour spreads across the horizon. The small cub pauses with its head gently raised, gazing beyond the frame while its soft white coat catches the last traces of warm light.
Behind it, the winter sky is washed in delicate layers of rose, lavender and pale peach, casting subtle reflections across patches of exposed ice. Low ridges of snow and distant frozen formations stretch towards the horizon, softened into shades of blue and violet beneath the fading light. Fine crystals cling to the cub's dense fur and surround its broad paws where they rest upon the snow.
With little movement to interrupt the vast landscape, the composition becomes a study in stillness and colour. At its centre, the solitary youngster appears remarkably small beneath the expansive evening sky, quietly observing an Arctic world transformed for a few fleeting moments by light.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus), growing into a Polar Bear requires an enormous amount of energy. During early life, cubs must fuel rapid increases in body size while simultaneously keeping warm in an environment where conserving heat is essential. Their mother's exceptionally rich milk supports this early growth, providing the concentrated energy needed to build both body mass and insulating fat.
Rest is an important part of this demanding period. Young cubs alternate bouts of activity and exploration with periods of sleep and quiet inactivity, allowing energy to be directed towards growth rather than unnecessarily expended. Staying close to their mother can also provide shelter and protection while youngsters rest.
As cubs become larger, their ability to retain body heat improves. Dense fur traps insulating air close to the skin, while an increasing layer of body fat provides further protection against Arctic temperatures. The small, vulnerable youngster therefore changes dramatically during its first years, gradually acquiring the size, strength and insulation necessary for life as one of the Arctic's largest mammals.

Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus)
For a young Polar Bear emerging into the Arctic world, sea ice is far more than frozen ocean, it is the habitat upon which its future ability to feed depends. Polar Bears evolved to hunt primarily ringed and bearded seals from the ice, using breathing holes, cracks and ice edges as places to intercept prey. Spring is especially important because ringed seals give birth at this time, creating a brief period of exceptional food abundance. Mothers leaving their maternity dens with young cubs must reach these productive hunting grounds and begin replenishing the enormous energy reserves spent during pregnancy, denning and nursing.
The timing of this seasonal opportunity matters enormously. Earlier spring breakup reduces the period during which bears can efficiently hunt seals and accumulate fat before the leaner months ahead. Research has linked reduced access to sea-ice prey with poorer body condition, lower maternal investment and reduced cub survival in affected populations. Land-based foods can supplement a bear's diet, but generally cannot replace the concentrated energy available from seal blubber on the scale required to sustain Polar Bear populations. Conserving Polar Bears therefore ultimately depends upon preserving the sea-ice food web that makes their highly specialised Arctic existence possible.
