PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Among the Pines captures a young American Black Bear carefully negotiating the broad limb of a mature pine tree. Its dark body is framed between the deeply textured trunks and branches, one forepaw reaching higher against the sloping bough while the remaining limbs maintain a secure hold beneath it.
Soft black fur covers the compact body, warming to subtle brown around the muzzle and face where filtered sunlight reaches through the canopy. Rounded ears rise prominently above the head, while the bear's lowered gaze gives the impression of careful concentration as it considers its next movement. Long, curved claws are visible against the bark, emphasising the physical connection between animal and tree.
The surrounding pine is rendered in layers of rugged bark, patches of green moss and fine needles illuminated by the morning light. Beyond the bear, fallen timber and ferns occupy the softly blurred forest floor, creating a sense of considerable height without removing the intimacy of the portrait.
Warm backlighting catches the outline of the cub's fur and the edges of the branches, placing the young climber within a quiet, sunlit moment high above the woodland understory.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The American Black Bear (Ursus americanus) is a remarkably capable climber, and the ability is particularly important during the early years of life. Cubs can ascend trees to escape perceived danger, rest above the ground or follow their mother, and females with young may encourage their cubs into trees when confronted by a potential threat.
Their climbing ability is supported by powerful limbs and strongly curved, non-retractable claws. These claws can grip irregularities in bark while the forelimbs pull the body upward and the hind limbs provide support and propulsion. Young bears are especially agile because their comparatively low body mass allows them to move through branches that would be less suitable for a much heavier adult.
Climbing can therefore form part of a cub's defensive repertoire long before it possesses the size and strength of maturity. When danger approaches, gaining height may place the youngster beyond the reach of some terrestrial threats while its mother remains nearby.
This ability changes as bears grow. Adults remain competent climbers, although increasing body mass can restrict how far they venture onto smaller branches. For a young black bear, however, the forest exists in three dimensions, the trees above are not merely surroundings, but pathways, refuges and an important part of learning how to survive.

For young black bears, the ability to climb is an important survival skill. Cubs are remarkably agile in trees, and mothers may direct them upward when danger approaches. In forested habitat, a tree can become an immediate refuge from potential threats, allowing vulnerable cubs to remain above the ground while their mother stays nearby or moves away until the disturbance has passed.
Not every tree offers the same security. Research has shown that mothers with cubs may favour large trees with strong trunks and rough bark that can be climbed quickly and safely, making mature trees valuable features within bear habitat. Protecting forests with a mixture of tree sizes and ages therefore preserves more than feeding grounds: it retains the physical structures young bears use for shelter, rest and escape during one of the most vulnerable periods of their lives.
