PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Among the Mushrooms captures a young chimpanzee seated within the shadowed understory of a tropical African forest, surrounded by an extraordinary gathering of fungi rising from the damp ground. The youngster sits quietly at their centre, looking upwards through the vegetation as warm sunlight penetrates the canopy behind it.
Dark hair covers the chimpanzee's small body, catching subtle highlights around the crown, shoulders and arms. Its hands rest loosely before it and its bare feet settle naturally against the wet forest floor, giving the youngster an unusually still presence amongst the towering fungal forms.
Around it, mushrooms emerge at dramatically different heights from moss, decomposing vegetation and saturated leaf litter. Broad caps reveal densely arranged gills beneath their edges, while smaller fruiting bodies appear between roots and patches of greenery. Moisture glistens across the ground and catches along the textured caps and stems.
The low viewpoint transforms the forest floor into a world of its own. From the youngster's perspective, familiar rainforest vegetation has been joined by strange temporary structures that can appear after wet conditions and disappear almost as quickly, a hidden landscape encountered at chimpanzee height.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) must learn to navigate an environment containing an enormous diversity of potential foods. Although fruit dominates the diet of many populations, chimpanzees may also consume leaves, seeds, pith, bark, insects, honey, meat and, in some communities, fungi.
Knowing what to eat is therefore a considerable challenge. Tropical forests contain thousands of plant and fungal species, and useful foods can differ in appearance, location and seasonal availability. Young chimpanzees spend years alongside their mothers, giving them prolonged opportunities to observe which resources experienced individuals select and how those foods are handled.
Research has documented mycophagy, the consumption of fungi, in wild chimpanzees, but it is not necessarily common or identical everywhere. Fungal species eaten in one chimpanzee community may receive little attention in another, forming part of the broader variation in feeding traditions found across the species' range. This makes fungi particularly interesting when considering how young chimpanzees acquire local ecological knowledge.
The forest floor itself is continually changing. Fungal fruiting bodies can emerge rapidly following suitable moisture and temperature conditions, while decomposing wood and vegetation support complex communities largely hidden from view.
For a young chimpanzee, learning the forest means more than recognising trees and finding ripe fruit. It means gradually discovering what can be eaten, what can be used, what should be investigated, and what should simply be left where it grows.

Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes)
Although fruit forms a major part of the chimpanzee diet, wild chimpanzees exploit a remarkably diverse range of forest foods, and fungi are now emerging as a particularly interesting part of that story. Recent research in Tanzania’s Issa Valley documented Eastern Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) eating wild mushrooms, with consumption increasing during the wet season when fungi became more abundant. Mushrooms accounted for around four per cent of feeding observations during the mushroom-rich wet season and reached considerably higher levels during peak months.
Researchers concluded that mushrooms can function as a fallback food for these chimpanzees, adding another resource to a diet that also includes fruits, leaves, seeds, insects and other foods. Some of the fungi eaten included chanterelles, milk caps and Termitomyces mushrooms. Discoveries such as these reveal why conserving complete forest ecosystems matters: protecting chimpanzees requires retaining not only prominent fruiting trees, but the extraordinary diversity of plants, fungi and smaller organisms that together provide alternative foods as seasons change.
