PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Among the Clover captures a young brown bear cub resting low within a meadow filled with clover and tiny wildflowers. Almost enveloped by the vegetation, the cub stretches across the grass with its broad head nestled amongst the leaves, gazing quietly through the plants surrounding its face.
Its soft brown coat carries subtle variations of warm grey and earthy brown, while rounded ears rise above the dense fur of its head. White clover blossoms mingle with small flowers of yellow, pink and violet, creating a delicate foreground around the youngster. Beyond, the meadow gradually softens into an out-of-focus landscape scattered with pale stones and muted greenery.
There is a wonderful stillness to the scene. Rather than portraying the strength and imposing scale associated with an adult bear, the artwork concentrates on the smallness of early life: a young cub almost disappearing amongst ordinary meadow plants as it quietly observes the enormous world it is still learning to navigate.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) cubs begin life entirely dependent upon their mother's milk, but growing into one of the world's largest land predators requires learning to eat a surprisingly diverse range of foods. Despite their formidable teeth, claws and reputation, brown bears are omnivores, and plant material can form a substantial part of their diet.
As cubs grow, they begin investigating the foods their mother encounters. Tender vegetation, roots, berries, fruits, insects and other small food items can all become part of this early exploration, while available foods vary enormously according to habitat and season. Cubs learn not simply what can be eaten, but where and when particular foods are likely to appear.
Their mother's behaviour provides an invaluable guide. By travelling and foraging beside her, young bears gradually build a mental map of their surroundings and the seasonal resources within them. This knowledge matters because an adult brown bear's diet must continually adapt throughout the year. For a cub exploring a meadow, sniffing and investigating the plants beneath its nose is therefore part of a much larger education, learning how its landscape can provide food.

Brown Bear (Ursus arctos)
Although their size and strength can make brown bears appear primarily carnivorous, plant foods can form a substantial part of their diet. Bears take advantage of vegetation when it is at its most nutritious and digestible, feeding on tender grasses, sedges, herbs, roots, flowers, fruits and berries as these foods become available through the seasons. In the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, for example, clover is among the plants eaten during spring and summer, alongside dandelions, horsetails and other fresh vegetation.
This seasonal flexibility helps brown bears survive across an extraordinary range of environments. Rather than depending upon one food source, they continually adjust their foraging as different resources appear and disappear. Protecting a bear population therefore means conserving a mosaic of productive habitats, meadows, shrublands, forests, wetlands and berry-producing areas, so that suitable foods remain available at different times of year. Maintaining this diversity can be especially important as environmental conditions and the timing of seasonal foods change.
