PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Among the Apple Boughs captures two young Common Raccoons nestled together along the broad branch of a leafy woodland tree. The lower youngster lies lengthwise against the moss-covered bark, its forelimbs draped over either side of the branch, while its companion leans closely across its back with one small paw resting against its sibling. Both look directly outward, their dark facial masks and pale muzzle markings standing sharply against dense grey-brown fur.
Warm sunlight filters through the surrounding canopy, illuminating the fine guard hairs around their ears and tracing a soft golden rim along their coats. Rough bark, patches of moss and pale lichen give the supporting branches a richly weathered texture, while overlapping green leaves frame the pair from every direction.
The woodland beyond dissolves into softly glowing circles of light, isolating the youngsters within their elevated resting place. Their close physical contact and relaxed posture lend the scene a sense of security, while their position high among the branches hints at the climbing abilities that will soon become an important part of their independent lives.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Common Raccoon (Procyon lotor) begins life in a sheltered den, commonly within a hollow tree, although rock crevices, fallen timber and other protected cavities may also be used. Litters are generally born in spring, and the kits initially remain entirely dependent upon their mother. Their eyes and ears are closed at birth, leaving them poorly equipped for the complex woodland environment they will later explore.
As their senses and coordination develop, the world outside the den gradually becomes accessible. Young raccoons begin accompanying their mother and practising many of the physical skills required for independent life. Among the most important is climbing. Their highly mobile paws and strong, curved claws allow them to grip irregular bark and negotiate trunks and branches with considerable agility.
Trees provide more than a route through the habitat. Elevated positions can offer refuge from some ground-based threats, while tree cavities may provide secure resting and denning sites. Raccoons are also capable of descending trees headfirst, aided by unusually flexible hind feet that can rotate substantially and help maintain purchase against the bark.
Youngsters commonly remain with their mother through their first summer and autumn while learning where to travel, rest and forage. Littermates therefore spend much of their early development together, exploring, climbing and investigating their surroundings before eventually dispersing.
For a young raccoon, a tree is consequently both playground and classroom: a place where increasingly confident movements gradually become the practical climbing skills of an exceptionally adaptable adult.

Common Raccoon (Procyon lotor)
Climbing becomes an important skill remarkably early in a raccoon's life. Kits initially remain sheltered in their den, but at around seven weeks they become increasingly mobile and capable of walking, running and climbing; soon afterwards they begin accompanying their mother on excursions. Trees provide young raccoons with more than somewhere to explore. Their branches offer elevated resting places and refuge from terrestrial predators, while fruiting trees can also become valuable seasonal feeding sites.
Raccoons are particularly accomplished climbers because their forelimbs have considerable rotational mobility, allowing the paws to adjust their position and maintain contact with a trunk as the animal ascends. For growing kits, repeated climbing gradually develops the strength, coordination and judgement needed to negotiate increasingly complex branches. Retaining mature trees and connected woodland therefore preserves not only denning habitat but also the vertical environment in which young raccoons learn to move safely and eventually forage independently.
