PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Among the Acorns captures a young European Hedgehog nestled low against the woodland floor, almost surrounded by a scattering of fallen acorns. Its tiny forepaws rest across one of the smooth brown nuts while its dark, inquisitive eyes look outward from beneath a delicate crown of newly developed spines.
Around the youngster, the forest floor forms a richly textured tapestry of moss, dark earth, curled oak leaves and slender fallen twigs. Acorns in varying shades of warm brown gather naturally around its body, some still enclosed within their textured cups, creating a gentle autumn setting without overwhelming the small animal at its centre.
Low golden light filters through the woodland beyond, illuminating the pale tips of the hedgehog's spines and tracing a fine halo around its compact silhouette. The distant vegetation dissolves into warm, softly blurred circles of light, keeping attention firmly on the minute details of its face, paws and coat. Surrounded by the fallen signs of the changing season, the tiny hedgehog appears almost concealed within the abundance of the forest floor.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The European Hedgehog's (Erinaceus europaeus) begin life entirely dependent upon their mother, but within only a few weeks they undergo a remarkable transition towards independent foraging. Once weaned, juveniles must learn to locate enough food to support rapid growth while also building the body reserves needed to survive their first winter.
Despite their frequent depiction alongside fallen fruit and nuts, European Hedgehogs are primarily insectivorous omnivores. Their natural diet includes beetles and their larvae, caterpillars, earthworms and numerous other invertebrates encountered while searching through vegetation and leaf litter. Fallen acorns themselves are therefore better understood as part of the hedgehog's autumn environment than as a typical food source. Oak woodland can nevertheless provide productive foraging habitat, with its soil, decaying vegetation and accumulated leaf litter supporting many of the small animals hedgehogs actually consume.
For juveniles born later in the breeding season, autumn can be particularly demanding. As temperatures decline and invertebrate activity changes, sufficient feeding becomes increasingly important. The youngster must accumulate enough energy reserves before entering its first period of winter hibernation — making the seemingly simple act of exploring the woodland floor an essential part of learning to survive independently.

European Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus)
Although the acorns surrounding this youngster are an unmistakable sign of autumn, European Hedgehogs are principally invertebrate hunters rather than nut eaters. Beetles, earthworms, caterpillars, millipedes, earwigs and other ground-dwelling invertebrates form the core of their natural diet. Fallen leaves, decaying vegetation and the soil beneath woodland trees therefore matter enormously: these apparently untidy places support many of the small animals hedgehogs search for as they forage across the forest floor.
This abundance becomes particularly important as autumn approaches. Hedgehogs normally reach their greatest body weights before entering hibernation, building the energy reserves that will sustain them through months when food is scarce and their metabolism is dramatically reduced. Conserving hedgehogs consequently involves preserving not simply places in which they can hide, but living, invertebrate-rich ground habitat, leaf litter, hedgerows, grass margins, composting vegetation and undisturbed soil. Reducing unnecessary pesticide use and maintaining varied vegetation can help ensure that these miniature autumn hunting grounds continue to provide enough prey.
