PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Adrift Together captures two young sea otters floating side by side upon the calm surface of a sheltered coastal bay. Reclining on their backs, the pair rest closely together with their small forepaws raised between them, one with its eyes peacefully closed while the other remains quietly attentive to its surroundings.
Broad ribbons of golden-brown kelp drift around their bodies, some disappearing beneath the clear water while others rest upon the gently rippled surface. The otters' dark, damp coats create rich texture against the smooth blues and muted reflections of the bay, with warm evening light catching their rounded faces, whiskers and lifted paws.
Beyond them, the water stretches towards a distant mountainous coastline softened by atmospheric haze. Pale peach and gold near the horizon gradually give way to cooler tones across the open water, creating a tranquil sense of space around the small pair. Their close contact forms the intimate centre of an otherwise expansive coastal scene, balancing companionship with the quiet immensity of the sea.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Sea Otter (Enhydra lutris) is one of the most thoroughly aquatic members of the weasel family, spending much of its life at the ocean's surface. Unlike seals and sea lions, sea otters do not routinely haul ashore to sleep. They can rest, groom, feed and even give birth while floating, supported by their remarkably buoyant bodies.
In kelp-rich habitats, otters may wrap themselves in floating fronds while resting. The vegetation acts as a natural anchor, reducing the likelihood that currents will carry a sleeping animal away from its resting area. Sea otters are also famous for forming floating groups known as rafts, which can range from a handful of individuals to much larger gatherings. Males and females generally form separate rafts, while mothers may be accompanied by dependent pups.
Although adults are often described as social at the surface, they do not form the tightly organised societies seen in some other marine mammals. Rafting instead provides a practical way to rest within productive coastal habitat. Among drifting kelp beds, the ocean itself becomes a resting place: part shelter, part gathering ground, and an environment to which the sea otter's entire way of life is extraordinarily well adapted.

Sea Otter (Enhydra lutris)
Life at the ocean surface has produced an unusual social behaviour in Sea Otters. When resting, they often gather in groups known as rafts, sometimes using floating kelp or seagrass to anchor themselves and reduce the chance of drifting with currents while they sleep. Rafts are frequently separated by sex, with females and their pups commonly resting together while males form their own groups. These sheltered surface gatherings allow otters to conserve energy between the demanding periods of diving, feeding and maintaining their exceptionally dense fur.
Rest itself has genuine conservation importance for an animal with such extraordinary energy requirements. Unlike seals and whales, Sea Otters possess little insulating body fat and depend instead upon dense, carefully maintained fur and a high metabolic rate to survive in cold Pacific waters. Adults may consume around 20–30% of their body mass each day, making uninterrupted periods of rest valuable for conserving energy. Human activity that repeatedly causes resting otters to dive or move away therefore carries an energetic cost, particularly for females already supporting dependent pups. Protecting quiet resting areas within productive coastal habitat is one small but important part of allowing recovering populations to thrive.
