Across the Nemegt follows a group of Gallimimus travelling through an immense open landscape beneath the warmth of a setting sun. Long necks rise above lightly built bodies as the animals move across the uneven ground, their slender hind limbs carrying them through a broad valley framed by distant mountains..
The nearest individual dominates the foreground, its narrow head held high as though surveying the country ahead. Smaller members of the group continue behind it at different distances, creating the impression of animals moving together rather than standing for observation. Their long tails extend behind their bodies for balance, while short forelimbs hang close to the chest.
Low vegetation, scattered stones and patches of fern-like growth break across the earth beneath their feet. Beyond them, waterways thread through the distant plain and rugged mountains rise into the glowing sky.
There is something distinctly bird-like in their silhouettes, elongated legs, flexible necks, small heads and alert postures. Seen together against the enormous landscape, the animals appear built for movement, carrying the eye with them across a world that disappeared more than sixty-six million years ago.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Gallimimus (Gallimimus bullatus) lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, approximately 70 million years ago, in what is now Mongolia. Its fossils are known from the Nemegt Formation of the Gobi Desert, rocks preserving an ancient environment very different from the arid landscape occupying the region today. Rivers, floodplains and comparatively well-watered habitats supported a diverse community of dinosaurs.
Gallimimus belonged to the ornithomimosaurs, a group of theropod dinosaurs whose long legs, elongated necks, small heads and lightly constructed bodies produced a striking resemblance to modern flightless birds. Its name means "chicken mimic," although at around six metres in length, an adult was considerably larger than the name might suggest.
Unlike many theropods, Gallimimus possessed a toothless beak. Exactly what it ate remains debated. Its anatomy has prompted suggestions ranging from plants and small animals to opportunistic omnivory, and it may have consumed different foods whenever they were available.
Its exceptionally long hind limbs indicate an animal adapted for rapid terrestrial movement. Although its exact maximum speed cannot be known, Gallimimus was almost certainly among the more cursorial dinosaurs of its ecosystem.
Fossil discoveries of multiple ornithomimosaurs together have raised fascinating questions about their social lives. Such evidence suggests that at least some members of this broader dinosaur group gathered together, although whether Gallimimus itself routinely travelled in coordinated herds remains uncertain.
Around 66 million years ago, the end-Cretaceous mass extinction eliminated Gallimimus along with all other non-avian dinosaurs. Its close resemblance to a gigantic ground-dwelling bird is particularly evocative today, birds themselves are living dinosaurs, the surviving avian branch of the theropod lineage.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
