PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A World in Bloom captures a young sloth pausing among a profusion of tropical orchids, its attention drawn towards a single flower resting almost against its nose. Clinging securely to the rungs of an old wooden ladder, the youngster leans sideways to investigate, its wide dark eyes and gently tilted head giving the encounter an unmistakable sense of curiosity.
Its long forelimbs curl naturally around the weathered timber, with strongly curved claws securing its position as the body remains supported against the ladder. Fine brown fur catches the warm light along the head, shoulders and arms, while the creamy facial markings and darker eye patches create the distinctive expression of the young animal.
Pink and white orchids surround the sloth at several depths, their patterned petals contrasting with rough timber, trailing moss and dense green foliage. The aged ladder disappears upwards through the vegetation, becoming almost part of the forest garden itself.
Soft sunlight filters through the trees beyond, illuminating the youngster and the flower at the centre of the composition and transforming a simple moment of investigation into an intimate portrait of discovery.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth (Bradypus variegatus) grows up in a world containing an enormous variety of tropical vegetation, yet learning what belongs on the menu begins with a much smaller and more familiar selection: the plants chosen by its mother.
Young sloths spend their early months clinging closely to the maternal body. As they begin sampling solid food, they encounter leaves from the trees and vines their mothers use for feeding. This early exposure is thought to play an important role in establishing individual dietary preferences, effectively giving each youngster an introduction to a particular selection of plants within the much broader forest community.
Brown-throated three-toed sloths are predominantly leaf-eaters, consuming foliage from numerous plant species, although individual animals can be surprisingly selective. Leaves differ greatly in nutritional value, toughness and concentrations of defensive plant chemicals, making food choice an important part of surviving on such a challenging diet.
Their specialised digestive system helps make this possible. A large, multi-chambered stomach houses microorganisms that slowly ferment fibrous plant material, extracting nutrients that would otherwise be difficult to obtain. Digestion can consequently take an exceptionally long time.
For a young sloth, therefore, exploring vegetation is part of learning its environment. Not every intriguing flower or leaf is food. Gradually, through maternal experience and its own investigation, the youngster develops the dietary knowledge that will sustain its remarkably specialised life among the leaves.

Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth (Bradypus variegatus)
The gentle appearance and naturally placid behaviour of sloths have unfortunately made them attractive targets for the wildlife trade. Brown-throated three-toed sloths are captured for sale as pets and are also used as photographic props in parts of Central and South America. Young animals are particularly vulnerable because they may be taken from their mothers, while their specialised diet, physiology and arboreal lifestyle make them poorly suited to conventional captivity. The species is included in CITES Appendix II, providing international controls on commercial trade.
Wildlife tourism can unintentionally contribute to this demand. Research examining brown-throated three-toed sloths used for tourist photographs found animals repeatedly handled and physically manipulated, with behaviours observed that may indicate fear, stress or anxiety. Responsible wildlife encounters therefore keep sloths where they belong, moving freely through their habitat and observed without touching or restraint. Choosing ethical tourism and refusing opportunities to hold wild animals can help remove the financial incentive for their capture.
