PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A Woodland Umbrella finds a European Hedgehog curled into a compact ball beneath two broad mushrooms on the damp woodland floor. Nestled deeply among moss, dark earth and rain-soaked fallen leaves, the little animal has tucked its body inward, leaving only its peaceful face and tiny forepaws visible between the protective sweep of its spines.
Above it, the mushrooms form a natural canopy. Water beads across their warm brown caps and gathers along their edges, while the pale gills beneath the larger mushroom create a delicate ceiling over the resting hedgehog. Every surface carries evidence of recent rain, from the glossy leaves scattered across the ground to the saturated moss surrounding the animal.
Soft light filters through the woodland beyond, catching individual droplets and illuminating the rich textures of spines, fungi and vegetation. The close composition transforms a small patch of forest floor into an intimate refuge.
The close composition captures the quiet scale at which much of woodland life unfolds, beneath leaves, beside roots and among the moss, where even a pair of mushrooms can seem to form a roof over a sleeping traveller.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The European Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is a predominantly nocturnal mammal found across much of western and northern Europe, occupying woodland edges, hedgerows, grasslands, parks and gardens. Although instantly recognisable for its coat of spines, much of a hedgehog's life depends upon the less conspicuous features of its habitat: dense vegetation, fallen leaves, logs and other sheltered places in which it can rest.
Its famous defensive posture is made possible by an extraordinary arrangement of muscles beneath the skin. When threatened, the hedgehog lowers its head and limbs and contracts these muscles, drawing the spiny skin around the body until the vulnerable face, belly and legs are protected inside a tight ball. Thousands of stiff, modified hairs then form a formidable outer barrier.
Hedgehogs do not normally spend their days exposed on the woodland floor. They construct or occupy concealed daytime nests, often using dry grasses and leaves beneath vegetation, logs, roots or other cover. Similar insulated nests become particularly important during winter hibernation.
Rain also transforms the hedgehog's feeding grounds. Moist conditions encourage earthworms, slugs and other invertebrates to become active near the surface, creating valuable foraging opportunities once the animal emerges after dark.
The curled youngster beneath the rain-beaded mushrooms therefore reflects two defining features of hedgehog life, a remarkable ability to protect itself and an instinctive preference for the hidden, sheltered world close to the ground.

European Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus)
European Hedgehogs are among the relatively few European mammals to undergo true hibernation, an extraordinary physiological response to winter food scarcity. Rather than simply sleeping, a hibernating hedgehog dramatically lowers its metabolic rate, heart rate and body temperature, allowing stored fat to sustain it through long periods when invertebrate prey is difficult to find. Hibernation is not continuous: hedgehogs periodically awaken and may even leave one nest and construct another, making access to several secure winter refuges valuable throughout the season.
Those refuges, known as hibernacula, are carefully constructed from tightly packed leaves and other vegetation, often beneath bramble, fallen logs or dense scrub. Their thick walls provide insulation and help maintain a stable microclimate despite changing temperatures outside. This makes fallen leaves and undisturbed woodland-floor vegetation important conservation resources rather than simply debris. Retaining leaf piles, log piles and sheltered patches through winter can protect both the nesting material hedgehogs need and the hidden places in which they survive the coldest months.
