PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A Window at Dusk captures a young Tawny Owl perched quietly upon the stone sill of an open cottage window. Small and softly feathered, the owl stands just outside the warmly illuminated room, its rounded head tilted inquisitively to one side as dark eyes look outward from a pale facial disc. Mottled shades of cream, tawny brown and grey break across its juvenile plumage, while the last sunlight catches the fine feathering around its head and shoulders.
Weathered wooden casements open on either side, their aged frames set into a rough stone wall almost enveloped by climbing ivy. Beyond the owl, the cottage interior recedes into amber shadow. A glowing table lamp, flowers and the suggestion of familiar furnishings create a warm domestic counterpoint to the greenery surrounding the window.
Late-afternoon light filters through the leaves and falls across the stonework, timber and feathers in soft gold. Poised at the boundary between the sheltered interior and the woodland beyond, the young owl becomes the quiet centre of an intimate encounter between two worlds.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Tawny Owl (Strix aluco) passes through an unusual stage of development in which leaving the nest and learning to fly are not the same event. Young Tawny Owls commonly leave their nest cavity while still only partly capable of sustained flight, entering a period often known as branching. Using their feet, claws, bill and developing wings, the youngsters clamber among branches and other elevated surfaces while gradually strengthening the muscles and coordination required for confident flight.
To human observers, a young owl encountered alone during this period can appear lost or abandoned. In most cases, however, its parents remain nearby. Adult Tawny Owls continue locating and feeding their dispersed young after they have left the nest, responding to the distinctive begging calls that help reveal each youngster's position after darkness falls.
Branching also allows siblings to spread beyond the confines of a single nest cavity while remaining within their parents' territory. Short climbs, awkward hops and increasingly controlled flights gradually replace the security of the nest. Over the following weeks, dependence gives way to greater mobility and hunting experience, making this apparently vulnerable stage an important transition between the protected nestling and the independent nocturnal predator.

Tawny Owl (Strix aluco)
Young Tawny Owls have an unusual transition between life in the nest and true flight. At less than a month old, they may deliberately leave the nesting cavity before they are capable of sustained flight, beginning a developmental stage known as branching. The owlets climb, hop and flutter through nearby branches, using their powerful feet and sharp talons to grip bark and even scramble back up tree trunks. Their parents continue locating them by their contact and begging calls, bringing food wherever the youngsters have settled.
Because a branching owlet can appear small, vulnerable and apparently alone, people sometimes assume it has fallen from its nest and needs rescuing. In most cases, however, this apparent independence is completely normal. The adults are usually nearby and continue caring for their young long after they leave the nest; juvenile Tawny Owls remain dependent upon their parents for food for several weeks and potentially two to three months. Unless an owlet is injured or in immediate danger, unnecessary removal can separate a healthy youngster from the parents that are still protecting and feeding it.
