PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A Puddle for Three captures three Mallard ducklings gathered around an unexpected pool of water on a sunlit garden path. Beside them, an old galvanised watering can has toppled onto its side, its long spout resting over the shallow puddle as though its spilled contents have created a miniature pond especially for its tiny visitors.
Each duckling investigates the water in its own way. Two lower their bills towards the glistening surface, sending delicate rings across the puddle, while the third stands beneath the watering-can spout, surrounded by the warm reflections of the garden. Their soft yellow-and-brown down catches the low sunlight, revealing the distinctive markings of their young plumage.
Pink roses, tiny white flowers and moss-covered stones enclose the scene, while a wooden garden gate recedes softly into the background. Bathed in golden light, an ordinary gardening mishap becomes a small moment of discovery for three inquisitive new arrivals.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) begins life remarkably well prepared for the world beyond the nest. Mallard ducklings are precocial, hatching covered in insulating down with their eyes open and legs sufficiently developed to walk, swim and begin feeding soon after leaving the nest. Unlike helpless nestlings that depend upon their parents to deliver food, young Mallards quickly start finding much of their own.
Their early diet consists largely of small aquatic invertebrates, insects and other protein-rich foods, supplemented increasingly by plant material as they develop. Ducklings investigate shallow water and damp ground with their bills, learning to dabble and forage while remaining under the protection of their mother.
Water is important from the beginning, but so too is warmth. Young ducklings cannot initially regulate their body temperature as effectively as adults and periodically shelter beneath their mother's feathers. Their characteristic striped and mottled down also provides valuable camouflage among reeds, grasses and broken reflections along the water's edge. Within only a few months, the tiny down-covered ducklings will acquire juvenile plumage and progress towards the strong flight and swimming abilities of adult Mallards.

Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)
For a Mallard duckling, shallow water is also a remarkably productive feeding ground. Ducklings begin feeding for themselves almost immediately, taking tiny aquatic insects and their larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates alongside seeds and soft plant material. Animal prey is particularly valuable during early growth because it provides concentrated protein and other nutrients needed for rapidly developing muscles and feathers. Rather than diving deeply, young Mallards commonly forage at or just below the surface, pecking and dabbling through water and wet vegetation for food.
This makes the smallest wet places more ecologically important than they may first appear. Shallow pools, marshy margins and seasonally flooded ground can support dense communities of aquatic invertebrates produced by the interaction of water, plants, microorganisms and decomposing organic material. When wetlands are drained, polluted or simplified, this hidden food web can decline even when some open water remains. Conserving productive wetlands therefore means protecting water quality and the vegetation-rich shallows where young waterbirds can find both abundant food and nearby cover.
