PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A Jurassic Drink finds a young Brachiosaurus standing in the shallows of a quiet forest stream, water still falling from its mouth after drinking. Its long neck rises above the surface while sturdy forefeet press into the wet bank, the small sauropod pausing as droplets descend in delicate strands towards the water below.
Sunlight filters through dense vegetation, catching the textured grey-brown skin and illuminating ripples spreading around the youngster's partially submerged body. Smooth stones line the stream, while fallen timber and layered greenery lead deeper into the shaded forest. Bright foliage at the water's edge introduces flashes of colour against the subdued earth and stone.
The close viewpoint gives the young animal an unexpectedly intimate presence. Its characteristic long neck and compact head are already apparent, yet its proportions remain those of an animal with an extraordinary amount of growing still ahead.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Brachiosaurus (Brachiosaurus altithorax) lived in western North America during the Late Jurassic Period, approximately 154–150 million years ago. Fossils are known from the Morrison Formation, whose rocks preserve ancient floodplains, river systems and seasonal environments inhabited by one of the best-known dinosaur communities in the fossil record.
Water would have been essential to an animal undergoing the extraordinary growth experienced by a young sauropod. Although palaeontologists cannot observe the drinking behaviour of Brachiosaurus directly, fossil trackways, sediments and the geology surrounding dinosaur remains allow aspects of the landscapes through which these animals travelled to be reconstructed.
Sauropods were once imagined as animals so enormous that they needed to live partly submerged in deep water, with their long necks sometimes depicted functioning almost like snorkels. That interpretation became particularly popular during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Later anatomical and biomechanical research overturned the idea: Brachiosaurus and other sauropods were fundamentally terrestrial animals, with limbs constructed to support their immense weight on land.
How such a long-necked animal actually drank raises a more interesting question. Brachiosaurus carried its shoulders relatively high because its forelimbs were longer than its hind limbs, and reaching water at ground level would have required substantial movement of the neck and possibly adjustment of the stance. A juvenile, with different proportions and far less body mass, may have faced somewhat different mechanical constraints from a full-grown adult.
The waterways of the Morrison landscape also represented far more than drinking places. Rivers and seasonal watercourses shaped vegetation, deposited the sediments that would eventually preserve dinosaur fossils, and created ecological corridors through otherwise seasonally dry country.
This young Brachiosaurus therefore stands beside something central to both its life and its eventual discovery in deep time. Water sustained the Jurassic ecosystem, and the sediments carried and deposited by ancient water systems helped preserve fragments of that world for us to find more than 150 million years later.
