PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A Basket for Two finds a pair of Mallard ducklings nestled unexpectedly among freshly gathered garden herbs. An old woven basket has become their temporary retreat, its curved willow sides enclosing the tiny birds in a sheltered pocket of greenery. Surrounded by feathery leaves, delicate stems and scattered white blossoms, the ducklings sit closely together, their soft brown-and-yellow down glowing in the late-afternoon light.
One rests upright against the herbs while its companion turns towards it, their matching facial stripes and dark, watchful eyes creating a gentle symmetry within the basket. The intricate weave of weathered willow contrasts with the softness of down and the varied textures of the freshly gathered plants.
Beyond them, terracotta pots and the timber wall of a garden shed fade into shadow, while warm sunlight spills across the basket from the garden beyond. What might ordinarily carry a gardener's harvest has instead become a tiny green refuge, occupied for a quiet moment by two inquisitive visitors.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) may produce a sizeable brood, with several ducklings travelling, feeding and resting together under the watch of their mother. Although capable of walking and swimming remarkably soon after hatching, young ducklings still depend heavily upon maternal protection during their vulnerable first weeks of life.
Newly hatched Mallards possess soft down rather than the more effective insulating plumage they will develop later. When chilled or tired, ducklings gather closely around their mother and can disappear beneath her breast and wing feathers, where her body provides both warmth and concealment. Siblings may also huddle closely together while resting, reducing exposed surface area and helping conserve warmth.
Rest forms an important part of their rapid early development. Between bouts of swimming, walking and foraging, young Mallards frequently settle in sheltered locations close to water, where vegetation can provide concealment from weather and predators. As their juvenile feathers gradually replace their natal down, they become increasingly independent and better able to regulate their own body temperature, one of the many transitions that carries them from tiny, huddling hatchlings towards life as fully fledged waterbirds.

Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)
Mallard ducklings enter the world remarkably well prepared for independence. Unlike helpless nestlings of many bird species, they are precocial, they hatch covered in down, with their eyes open, and can walk, swim and begin feeding themselves within a very short time. The female provides warmth, protection and guidance rather than bringing food directly to her young. Soon after the final eggs hatch, she leads the brood away from the nest toward suitable wetland habitat, where the ducklings begin searching for aquatic invertebrates, seeds and tender plant material.
That early mobility makes the habitat surrounding a nest especially important. A seemingly safe nesting site is only part of what a Mallard family requires; ducklings must also be able to reach shallow water with abundant food and protective vegetation. Wetland margins containing emergent plants, grasses and other cover provide feeding areas while giving small ducklings places to conceal themselves from predators. Protecting breeding Mallards therefore means conserving connected mosaics of nesting cover, wetland edges and productive shallow water rather than focusing upon the nest alone.
