PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Virgo presents an elegant portrayal of renewal, harvest, and the eternal turning of the seasons through the graceful figure of Persephone emerging from the ancient underworld into the first light of spring. Walking barefoot along a weathered stone pathway, the goddess carries a golden sheaf of ripened wheat, her flowing garments blending rich earth browns, soft olive greens, and deep sapphire tones that mirror the transition between dormant winter and flourishing life. Above her, the constellation of Virgo shines within a luminous morning sky, while the rising sun bathes the distant countryside in warm golden light.

The composition beautifully contrasts two worlds. To the left, the entrance to the ancient Ploutonion caves lies beneath a frost-covered pomegranate tree, its crimson fruit scattered across the frozen ground in remembrance of the fateful seeds that bound Persephone to the underworld. To the right, vibrant wildflowers bloom beside an ancient stone well adorned with the Virgo glyph, honouring the enduring devotion of Demeter, whose search for her daughter shaped the changing seasons.

Delicate sapphire gemstones crown Persephone's brow, while luminous peridots woven throughout her gown and warm carnelian accents beneath the pomegranate tree subtly enrich the composition with traditional zodiac symbolism. Soft golds, gentle greens, warm ivory, and rich autumnal earth tones unite mythology, landscape, and celestial imagery into a timeless celebration of renewal, hope, and the enduring rhythm of life.

CULTURAL CONTEXT AND SYMBOLOGY

Virgo is the sixth astrological sign of the zodiac, representing those born between August 23 and September 22

Traditionally ruled by Mercury and associated with the element of Earth, Virgo has long symbolised harvest, wisdom, devotion, and the quiet rewards born through patience and careful stewardship. While later traditions often depict Virgo simply as a maiden holding wheat, its deepest mythological roots are closely intertwined with the story of Persephone and the changing of the seasons.

According to Greek mythology, Persephone, daughter of Demeter, goddess of agriculture, was carried away to the underworld by Hades to become his queen. Grief-stricken by her daughter's disappearance, Demeter allowed the earth to wither into endless winter as she searched tirelessly throughout the world. Although Zeus eventually ordered Persephone's release, Hades offered her pomegranate seeds before she departed. Having eaten the fruit of the underworld, Persephone became bound to return for part of each year, giving rise to the annual cycle of winter and spring.

This artwork captures Persephone's return to the mortal world, emerging from the sacred caves of the ancient Ploutonion at Eleusis with wheat held gently in her hands. Around her, winter gradually yields to new growth, honouring both Demeter's enduring love and the promise that life, though it may disappear for a season, always finds its way back into the light. The constellation Virgo remains as a lasting tribute to this timeless story of renewal, harvest, and hope.
