PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Tiger of the Marsh celebrates the distinctive markings, quiet confidence, and enduring connection between the Tiger Snake and Australia's freshwater wetlands. Resting upon a moss-covered river stone at the edge of a tranquil marsh, the snake surveys its surroundings as soft morning mist drifts across the still water. Golden dawn light filters through the reeds, illuminating weathered timber and reflecting gently from the calm surface. Its muscular body, patterned in broad bands of olive, charcoal, and warm gold, echoes the natural colours of the surrounding marshland while its dark tongue samples the cool morning air.
The peaceful atmosphere is enhanced by subtle reflections, dew-covered vegetation, and the gentle glow of first light spreading across the wetland. Rather than portraying the snake as threatening, the composition highlights its quiet composure and perfect adaptation to this water-shaped landscape. It is a portrait of balance, resilience, and the hidden beauty of one of Australia's most important wetland predators.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Tiger Snake (Notechis scutatus)
The Tiger Snake (Notechis scutatus) is one of Australia's most adaptable elapid snakes, occupying an extraordinary range of habitats across southern Australia. Although closely associated with wetlands, swamps, estuaries, and river systems, it also inhabits coastal heath, grasslands, woodlands, and offshore islands wherever suitable shelter and prey are available. An accomplished swimmer, it moves confidently through both fresh and coastal waters while hunting frogs, fish, birds, reptiles, and small mammals.
The species takes its common name from the bold banding displayed by many individuals, although colour and pattern vary considerably across its range, with some snakes appearing almost entirely black or olive. Despite its reputation as one of Australia's medically significant venomous snakes, Tiger Snakes generally avoid confrontation and will retreat when possible. As an apex predator of southern wetlands, they play an important ecological role in maintaining healthy populations of amphibians and other small vertebrates.

CONSERVATION INFORMATION.

This design donates to animal and conservation efforts
The Tiger Snake is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List and remains widespread across much of southern Australia. However, some regional populations face greater conservation challenges, including the isolated Flinders Ranges population, which is listed as Vulnerable in South Australia.
Because Tiger Snakes depend heavily on healthy wetlands and abundant amphibian populations, habitat drainage, declining water quality, prolonged drought, and wetland degradation can significantly affect local populations. Reductions in frog numbers caused by disease, pollution, and habitat loss also reduce an important food source. Additional pressures include road mortality, persecution due to fear of venomous snakes, and habitat fragmentation. Protecting wetlands, riparian corridors, and native freshwater ecosystems remains essential to supporting this important predator and the ecological balance of Australia's southern waterways.
