PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Tide Pool Tapestry is an intimate celebration of colour, texture, and the quiet resilience of one of Australia's most captivating intertidal inhabitants. Resting upon a sunlit rock shelf beneath crystal-clear tidal water, a magnificent Carpet Sea Star transforms an ordinary shoreline into a living work of art. Positioned at the centre of the composition, its intricate mosaic of brilliant oranges, deep violets, muted teals, creamy whites, and earthy browns creates a striking contrast against the dark stone below. Gentle ripples across the water cast shimmering patterns of light that dance across surrounding shells, sand, and marine algae, filling the scene with warmth and movement.
The composition reveals the extraordinary beauty often hidden within Australia's rocky shores. Tiny fish drift through the shallow water while delicate strands of seaweed sway gently with each passing wave, framing the sea star without distracting from its remarkable form. Rich textures, refracted sunlight, and vivid natural colour combine to celebrate the remarkable diversity that thrives within the intertidal zone, inviting the viewer to pause and appreciate one of the coast's most overlooked natural treasures.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Carpet Sea Star (Patiriella calcar)
The Carpet Sea Star is one of Australia's most familiar and remarkably variable sea stars, inhabiting rocky shorelines, tidal platforms, sheltered reefs, and shallow coastal waters throughout southern Australia. Few marine invertebrates display such extraordinary diversity in colour and pattern. Individuals may appear in brilliant shades of orange, red, purple, blue, green, cream, or brown, often combining these colours into intricate mosaics that provide effective camouflage against algae-covered rocks and tidal pools.
Life within the intertidal zone demands exceptional resilience. Carpet Sea Stars regularly endure changing tides, fluctuating temperatures, varying salinity, and periods of exposure to the air during low tide. Using hundreds of tiny tube feet, they move slowly across rocks while feeding on algae, detritus, and microscopic organic material. As important grazers and recyclers, they contribute to the health of coastal ecosystems by helping maintain the natural balance of life within Australia's dynamic shoreline habitats.

CONSERVATION INFORMATION.

This design donates to animal and conservation efforts
The Carpet Sea Star (Patiriella calcar) is currently regarded as a species of Least Concern, with stable populations distributed across much of southern Australia's coastline. Its broad geographic range, adaptability, and ability to occupy a variety of intertidal habitats have contributed to its continued success, making it one of the most familiar echinoderms encountered along Australia's rocky shores.
Although not presently considered threatened, the species remains dependent on healthy coastal ecosystems. Pollution, habitat disturbance, coastal development, marine heatwaves, declining water quality, and the broader effects of climate change all have the potential to alter the delicate balance of intertidal communities. By maintaining clean coastlines, protecting rocky reef habitats, and conserving Australia's diverse marine environments, these colourful sea stars, and the countless smaller organisms that share their tidal world, can continue to flourish as enduring symbols of the remarkable biodiversity found where land meets sea.
