The Snubfin Shallows celebrates the quiet beauty of one of Australia's most elusive marine mammals. Beneath the warm, crystal-clear waters of a sheltered tropical estuary, a solitary Australian Snubfin Dolphin glides effortlessly through a mosaic of sunlight and shadow. Its rounded forehead, short beak, and diminutive dorsal fin distinguish it immediately from the more familiar oceanic dolphins, giving the species a gentle and unmistakable appearance.
Golden rays filter through the rippling surface above, casting intricate patterns of dancing light across the dolphin's pale slate-grey body as it passes silently over sandy shallows, seagrass meadows, and scattered coral outcrops. Small schools of silvery fish weave through the water while tangled mangrove roots frame the edge of the estuary, revealing the intimate coastal world upon which this remarkable species depends.
Rather than portraying speed or spectacle, the composition celebrates stillness and subtlety. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Australian Snubfin Dolphin (Orcaella heinsohni)
The Australian Snubfin Dolphin is one of the newest marine mammals recognised by science, formally described as a distinct species in 2005 after decades of being mistaken for the Irrawaddy Dolphin. Endemic to northern Australia and southern New Guinea, it inhabits shallow estuaries, river mouths, mangrove forests, sheltered bays, and coastal lagoons where calm, productive waters provide abundant food.
Unlike most dolphins, the Snubfin lacks a pronounced beak, instead displaying a rounded forehead, broad body, and small triangular dorsal fin that give it a distinctive silhouette. Living in small, close-knit groups, these shy dolphins are rarely seen far from shore and often avoid boats and human activity. They employ a variety of feeding techniques, including the remarkable behaviour known as spit-feeding, in which jets of water are used to concentrate schools of fish before capture. Their specialised habitat, unique appearance, and elusive nature make them one of Australia's most distinctive and least familiar cetaceans.

Because neighbouring groups rarely mix, isolated populations have limited opportunities to recover if local numbers decline. Conservation therefore focuses on protecting critical habitat rather than only the animals themselves. Safeguarding mangrove forests, seagrass meadows, estuarine water quality, and natural tidal processes helps preserve the feeding grounds and nursery areas these dolphins rely upon. Long-term monitoring of individual populations has become a cornerstone of conservation, ensuring that changes within Australia's northern coastal ecosystems can be detected early and managed before isolated populations are placed at greater risk.

As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
