PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Seagrass Grazer celebrates the quiet presence and gentle nature of one of Australia's most remarkable marine mammals. Resting within a flourishing seagrass meadow, a mature dugong grazes peacefully across the sunlit seabed, its broad, downturned muzzle gently uprooting tender seagrass while delicate clouds of pale sediment drift into the surrounding water. Brilliant shafts of sunlight penetrate the crystal-clear turquoise sea, casting shimmering patterns across its weathered slate-grey body, where subtle scars, soft folds, and traces of algae tell the story of a lifetime spent roaming Australia's tropical coastline.
Surrounding the dugong, slender blades of seagrass sway with the gentle current as small reef fish weave effortlessly through the underwater meadow, bringing movement and colour to an otherwise tranquil scene. The composition focuses not on spectacle, but on rhythm and balance. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Dugong (Dugong dugon)
The dugong is the only strictly herbivorous marine mammal in the world and the sole surviving member of the family Dugongidae. Unlike whales and dolphins, which hunt prey, dugongs spend their lives grazing on underwater meadows of seagrass that fringe warm tropical coastlines throughout the Indo-Pacific. Their broad, muscular lips and sensitive whiskers allow them to detect and uproot nutritious seagrass rhizomes buried beneath the sand, often leaving winding feeding trails across the seabed.
This continual grazing plays an important ecological role. By trimming older seagrass and disturbing the sediment, dugongs encourage fresh growth that supports a diverse community of fish, crustaceans, turtles and countless other marine organisms. Healthy dugong populations are therefore closely linked with healthy seagrass ecosystems.
Northern Australia supports the largest remaining dugong population on Earth, making its coastal waters internationally significant for the conservation of the species. The Seagrass Grazer celebrates this gentle marine gardener, whose quiet daily routine helps sustain one of the ocean's most productive coastal habitats.

The greatest challenge facing dugongs is the loss of the seagrass meadows upon which they depend. Unlike many marine mammals that can switch prey or feeding areas, dugongs rely almost exclusively on healthy seagrass beds for survival. Cyclones, coastal dredging, declining water quality, sediment runoff and climate-driven marine heatwaves can destroy these habitats, leaving entire regions unable to support dugong populations.
Australia has become a global leader in dugong conservation by protecting extensive seagrass habitats through marine parks, fisheries management and Indigenous Sea Country programs, where Traditional Owners play a vital role in monitoring and caring for coastal ecosystems. Continued restoration of seagrass meadows, together with improved water quality and habitat protection, is essential for ensuring that dugongs continue to thrive across northern Australia's internationally significant coastal waters.

As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
