PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Sea of Sheep unfolds across a vast panorama of rolling green hills filled with hundreds of Romney sheep moving between adjoining paddocks. Beginning in the lower foreground, the flock rises along a fenced track before spreading across the contours of the land in broad, flowing lines. Individual animals gradually merge into pale ribbons that curve through the landscape, transforming the movement of livestock into an intricate pattern of repetition, rhythm, and scale.
Dawn light enters from the distant left, washing the hills with soft gold and illuminating the upper edges of the flock. Mist lingers in the lower valleys and between distant tree belts, creating layers of green, cream, and muted grey that recede towards the horizon. Fences, tracks, and grazing lines echo the natural shape of the hills, lending order to the immense gathering without diminishing its organic movement. No single sheep dominates the composition; instead, the flock itself becomes the subject. Expansive yet carefully structured, the image captures the visual grandeur of pastoral farming across open country.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Romney sheep (Ovis aries)
The Romney became one of the most influential breeds in New Zealand after its introduction from Britain during the nineteenth century. Its ability to tolerate wet conditions, walk across extensive hill country, and produce both wool and lambs made it especially well suited to the young nation’s pasture-based farming systems.
As sheep numbers expanded, Romneys formed the foundation of many large commercial flocks. Farmers developed extensive networks of fences, tracks, water points, and rotational paddocks to manage animals across rolling landscapes. Seasonal pasture growth determined when flocks were moved, while skilled shepherding and working dogs helped guide large numbers efficiently between grazing areas.
The breed’s contribution extended beyond individual farms. Romney wool and meat became important export commodities, helping shape New Zealand’s rural economy and international agricultural identity. Although national flock numbers and farming systems have changed over time, the image of pale sheep flowing across green hills remains closely connected with New Zealand pastoral history and with the breed that supported much of its development.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio.
