The Golden-tailed Gecko (Strophurus taenicauda)
The Golden-tailed Gecko is a distinctive arboreal gecko found within a relatively small region of south-eastern Queensland. Unlike many Australian geckos that inhabit arid landscapes, it favours moist woodlands, vine thickets, and sheltered forests where humidity remains consistently high.
A member of the remarkable Strophurus genus, it belongs to a group renowned for their unusual defensive adaptations. When threatened, many species can raise their tails and release a sticky, foul-smelling secretion from specialised glands, deterring predators without the need for confrontation. Nocturnal by nature, the Golden-tailed Gecko emerges after sunset to hunt insects and other small invertebrates, using broad adhesive toe pads to move effortlessly across branches, trunks, and foliage. Its vivid ruby-red eyes, golden tail markings, and finely patterned scales make it one of Australia's most visually striking geckos and a remarkable example of adaptation to life within the forest canopy.

The Golden-tailed Gecko (Strophurus taenicauda) is classified as Near Threatened due to its restricted distribution and the continuing loss of suitable woodland habitat across south-eastern Queensland. It relies on mature forests containing hollow-bearing trees, standing dead timber, and complex vegetation structure that provide shelter, breeding sites, and abundant insect prey.
Habitat clearing for agriculture, infrastructure, and resource development has fragmented much of its natural range, while altered fire regimes and predation by introduced animals further affect local populations. Although some colonies persist within protected forests and remnant woodland patches, conserving native vegetation and maintaining habitat connectivity remain essential for the long-term survival of this remarkable gecko. Its continued presence highlights the importance of protecting Australia's increasingly fragmented subtropical forests.
