PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Matriarch portrays a mature Kiko doe standing high above a sweeping mountain valley in the final warmth of the day. Positioned among weathered rocks and coarse tussock grasses, she faces across the slope with a calm, attentive expression. Her sturdy frame and firmly placed legs give the portrait a quiet sense of assurance, while the long beard and slightly windswept coat reflect the exposed nature of the high-country setting. Several goats graze far below, their small forms reinforcing her elevated position within the composition.
Golden evening light passes across the doe’s back and shoulders, revealing layered shades of oatmeal, silver-tan, warm cream, and muted brown within the shaggy fleece. Dark stone and dry grass add rough texture around her feet, while green ridges descend towards a winding river and distant mountain ranges softened by blue-grey haze. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Kiko goat (Capra hircus)
The Kiko goat was developed in New Zealand during the 1980s through a programme focused on practical performance rather than appearance. Breeders began with hardy feral does that had already survived for generations in demanding country, then introduced selected dairy genetics to improve growth and maternal milk production. The resulting animals were tested under extensive conditions with limited assistance.
Only goats that raised strong offspring, remained fertile, travelled soundly, and maintained condition on natural forage were retained. This field-based selection distinguished the Kiko from breeds developed mainly through show standards or visual uniformity. Performance within the landscape became the defining measure of quality.
The breed’s name comes from the Māori word for meat, reflecting its intended agricultural purpose. Kikos were created to convert hill-country vegetation into productive growth while requiring comparatively modest intervention. Their development demonstrates a modern approach to livestock breeding in which maternal performance, survival, and efficiency were evaluated together. The mature doe embodies this philosophy, representing the tested female lines upon which the breed was founded.
