PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Indigo Glide follows a solitary blue whale as it moves through an expansive underwater landscape. Its long, streamlined body crosses the composition diagonally, leading the eye from the rounded head in the foreground towards the narrowing tail disappearing into deeper water. One pectoral fin hangs gently below the body, reinforcing the whale’s slow and effortless passage.
Filtered sunlight descends from the surface in soft blue rays, revealing pale marbling, fine scars and shifting silver highlights across the whale’s skin. A loose gathering of small fish travels beneath and alongside it, their scale emphasising the immense proportions of the central figure. Below, the distant seabed fades into shadow, while the water around the whale deepens from luminous cobalt to dark indigo.
The open space surrounding the animal creates a strong sense of solitude without making the scene feel empty. Movement remains smooth and uninterrupted, giving the image a quiet rhythm shaped by light, depth and the gradual passage of the whale through the blue.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus)
Blue whales are adapted for efficient movement across vast stretches of open ocean. Their bodies are unusually long and streamlined, with a broad, flattened head, narrow tail stock and relatively small dorsal fin positioned far along the back. Powerful vertical strokes of the tail provide propulsion, while the pectoral fins assist with balance, turning and changes in depth.
Although often widely separated, blue whales are not acoustically isolated. They produce some of the most powerful low-frequency calls in the animal kingdom, many of which travel over great distances under favourable ocean conditions. Different populations use recognisable call patterns, allowing researchers to distinguish groups and investigate seasonal movements through passive acoustic monitoring. These deep sounds may help whales maintain contact, locate potential mates or coordinate activity across waters where visibility is limited and individuals are widely dispersed. Recordings made from fixed underwater instruments have therefore become invaluable for detecting blue whales in remote regions where visual surveys are difficult, revealing their presence even when the animals themselves remain far from view.

Today’s blue whales inhabit oceans increasingly shaped by shipping, industrial activity and climate-driven ecological change. Vessel strikes are among the most serious immediate threats, particularly where busy shipping lanes overlap with productive feeding areas. Entanglement in fishing equipment can also cause injury, exhaustion or death, while underwater noise may mask the low-frequency calls blue whales use across great distances.
Around Australia, important feeding habitat includes the Bonney Coast upwelling and waters off Western Australia used by pygmy blue whales. These productive regions depend on seasonal ocean conditions that concentrate krill, making them valuable both to whales and to human industries. Climate change may alter the timing, location and reliability of these feeding opportunities. Conservation increasingly relies on identifying biologically important areas, adjusting vessel activity, limiting harmful noise and protecting prey-rich marine systems. Safeguarding the ocean processes that bring blue whales together with their food is central to their continued recovery.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
