PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Highland Watch captures the quiet authority and timeless presence of the Wedge-tailed Eagle as it surveys Australia's rugged high country from an ancient granite outcrop. Standing upon a weathered stone perch overlooking an immense landscape of forested valleys and layered mountain ranges, the eagle pauses in complete stillness beneath the clear light of afternoon. Beyond its commanding vantage point, blue escarpments dissolve into distant haze while scattered eucalypts cling to rocky slopes shaped by millions of years of erosion, creating a landscape that feels both immense and enduring.
The eagle itself dominates the composition through posture rather than movement. Rich chocolate-brown plumage is rendered in extraordinary detail, revealing the layered texture of every feather across its broad back and folded wings, while its pale bill and penetrating amber eye draw immediate attention. Surrounded by the silence of the mountains, the bird appears less like a hunter than a patient guardian, embodying the vigilance, resilience, and quiet confidence that have made the Wedge-tailed Eagle one of Australia's most enduring symbols of wilderness.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Wedge-tailed Eagle (Aquila audax)
The Wedge-tailed Eagle is Australia's largest bird of prey and among the largest eagles in the world, with a wingspan that may approach 2.8 metres. Occupying almost every major habitat across mainland Australia, it ranges from alpine forests and rugged escarpments to deserts, grasslands, and coastal plains. Despite its immense size, the eagle is remarkably agile, using rising thermals to travel vast distances while expending very little energy.
Breeding pairs establish large territories centred around enormous stick nests known as eyries, often positioned high in mature trees or on inaccessible cliff ledges overlooking valleys and open country. These nests are reused for many years, gradually expanding with each breeding season until they become some of the largest constructed by any bird in Australia. Throughout countless generations, the Wedge-tailed Eagle has occupied a prominent place in the traditions of many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, where it is widely regarded as a symbol of strength, wisdom, and guardianship over Country.

CONSERVATION INFORMATION.

This design donates to animal and conservation efforts
Across mainland Australia, the Wedge-tailed Eagle remains widespread and secure, benefiting from its remarkable adaptability and ability to occupy an extraordinary diversity of landscapes. The outlook is very different in Tasmania, however, where the endemic subspecies exists in far smaller numbers and faces ongoing conservation challenges. Because these eagles reproduce slowly and maintain extensive breeding territories, the loss of even a few nesting pairs can significantly affect regional populations.
Modern threats include the removal of mature nesting trees, disturbance around active eyries during the breeding season, collisions with powerlines and wind turbines, and secondary poisoning from pest-control programs. Habitat fragmentation can also reduce suitable hunting grounds and nesting opportunities, particularly in heavily modified landscapes.
Conservation efforts focus on protecting breeding territories, retaining old-growth nesting trees, reducing human disturbance during nesting, and improving land management practices that support healthy prey populations. These measures not only benefit Australia's largest eagle but also help preserve the ecological integrity of the mountain forests, woodlands, and open country it has dominated for millennia.
