PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Hallikar Herd unfolds across the sunlit grasslands of southern India, where a herd of Hallikar cattle grazes peacefully beneath the first warm light of morning. Distributed naturally throughout the open savanna, the animals create a balanced composition of quiet movement and stillness, some lowering their heads to feed while others stand alert, their elegant upward-curving horns silhouetted against the softly illuminated landscape. Their pale silver-grey coats, shaded with deeper charcoal tones across the neck and shoulders, contrast beautifully with the surrounding golden grasses. Scattered acacia trees, broad-canopied banyans, and distant low hills emerge through layers of morning haze, providing depth while preserving the expansive character of the countryside.
Golden sunrise light filters gently through drifting mist, accentuating the smooth contours of the cattle and revealing the delicate textures of dry grasses, weathered bark, and suspended dust. Warm ochres, muted olive greens, soft greys, and amber highlights combine to create a harmonious palette that reflects the quiet beauty of the Deccan landscape. The varied positions of the herd lend the scene a natural rhythm, drawing the eye through the composition without diminishing its sense of tranquillity. Together, these elements create a timeless pastoral portrait, capturing the enduring relationship between the Hallikar breed and the landscapes that have shaped its character for generations.
ABOUT THIS COLLECTION
#aboutThisCollection
BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Hallikar (Bos taurus indicus) is a historic zebu-type cattle breed from Karnataka, India, especially associated with the Mysore region. For generations, it has been valued as a draught breed, admired for stamina, alertness, and the ability to work across demanding terrain and warm conditions. Traditionally, Hallikar cattle were prized for agricultural work, transport, and their distinctive trotting ability. Their lean, athletic frame, prominent hump, strong legs, and long sweeping horns reflect a breed developed for movement, resilience, and practical service rather than ornament alone. In South Indian rural heritage, the Hallikar holds a respected place as a symbol of strength, utility, and continuity. This artwork honours that legacy by placing the herd within an open landscape that reflects the endurance and quiet dignity of working cattle shaped by both environment and human care.
