BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Jersey (Bos taurus) originated on the Island of Jersey in the English Channel, where centuries of careful breeding produced one of the world's oldest and most highly regarded dairy breeds. To preserve the quality and purity of its cattle, the island introduced strict breeding regulations during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, helping establish the distinctive characteristics for which Jerseys remain renowned today. Their refined build, efficient feed conversion, and exceptionally rich milk quickly earned international recognition, allowing the breed to spread far beyond its island homeland. Although Jersey cows became celebrated for dairy production, carefully selected breeding bulls played an equally important role in preserving the breed's consistency, temperament, and productivity across generations. This artwork honours that enduring legacy, portraying the Jersey bull as a symbol of careful stewardship and the centuries of selective breeding that shaped one of the world's most influential dairy breeds.
