The Orpington chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is one of the most beloved heritage poultry breeds in the world. Developed in 1886 by English poultry breeder William Cook in the town of Orpington, Kent, the breed was carefully designed to be an exceptional dual-purpose bird, valued equally for meat production and dependable egg laying. Over time, the Buff Orpington became the most famous and widely recognized variety. Characterized by its broad frame, deep body, and exceptionally loose, fluffy feathering, the breed possesses a distinctive softness that makes it appear even larger than its considerable size suggests.
