PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Crystal Billabong offers an intimate glimpse beneath the surface of one of northern Australia's pristine freshwater waterways, where a Freshwater Crocodile glides effortlessly through clear, sunlit water. Suspended above a sandy riverbed, the crocodile moves with remarkable poise, its long narrow snout and streamlined body perfectly suited to life below the surface. Shafts of golden sunlight penetrate the rippling water, illuminating every scale while delicate aquatic plants sway gently among scattered branches and smooth river stones.
The underwater perspective reveals a world of quiet clarity, where soft turquoise water contrasts with the warm amber light filtering from above. Patterns of sunlight dance across the riverbed, enhancing the sense of movement without disturbing the calm stillness of the scene. The Freshwater Crocodile (Crocodylus johnstoni)
The Freshwater Crocodile possesses one of the most distinctive skulls of any crocodilian. Its long, slender snout creates minimal resistance as it moves through the water, allowing rapid sideways strikes when capturing fish, freshwater crustaceans, aquatic insects, and small amphibians. Lined with numerous fine, sharply pointed teeth, the jaws are ideally adapted for gripping slippery prey rather than tackling large mammals, reflecting the specialised feeding habits of this uniquely Australian species.
Excellent underwater vision, sensitive pressure receptors around the jaws, and a streamlined body enable the crocodile to detect even slight disturbances in the water. Much of its hunting is based on patience, remaining almost motionless before launching a rapid, precisely timed strike. These specialised adaptations have allowed the Freshwater Crocodile to occupy a distinct ecological niche within Australia's inland waterways, where it plays an important role in maintaining balanced and healthy freshwater ecosystems.

The Freshwater Crocodile is currently classified as Least Concern, with stable populations distributed across much of northern Australia. Long-term legal protection and the preservation of extensive river systems have enabled the species to remain secure throughout much of its natural range.
Nevertheless, maintaining healthy freshwater habitats remains essential. Changes to river flow, pollution, recreational disturbance of nesting sites, and accidental capture in fishing gear can affect local populations. The continued spread of Cane Toads also poses a threat, particularly to younger crocodiles that are susceptible to the toxins produced by these invasive amphibians. Ongoing habitat management, research, and monitoring of crocodile populations help safeguard this species while also protecting the broader river ecosystems that support a diverse community of fish, turtles, birds, and other native wildlife.

As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
