PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Crimson Wing captures a dramatic moment at the threshold between daylight and night as a Little Red Flying-fox prepares to join the gathering movement above the forest. Suspended beneath a flowering eucalyptus branch, the animal stretches its wings into the warm evening air while the setting sun glows across the distant horizon. Fiery backlighting passes through the thin wing membranes, transforming them into broad sails of amber and copper and revealing their intricate network of veins.
Around the flying-fox, eucalyptus leaves and pale blossoms frame the foreground, while the blurred silhouettes of countless colony members spread across the fading sky. The close perspective holds every detail of the individual animal in sharp focus, from its curved claws and russet fur to the delicate structure of its extended wings. Beyond it, the distant stream of flying shapes creates a sense of scale and movement. The composition captures the instant before the evening sky fills with wingbeats, revealing a small animal as part of one of Australia’s great seasonal journeys.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Little Red Flying-fox (Pteropus scapulatus)
The Little Red Flying-fox is Australia’s smallest mainland flying-fox and one of its most widely travelled. Rather than remaining within a fixed territory, it moves across northern, eastern and inland Australia in response to changing supplies of nectar and pollen. These journeys may lead colonies far beyond the coastal regions commonly associated with other flying-foxes.
Seasonal flowering events can attract immense numbers to a single district. After resting together through the day, the animals leave their camp around sunset and spread across the surrounding landscape in search of blossoming eucalypts, bloodwoods, paperbarks and other native trees. When flowering declines, the colony may move again, following food across hundreds of kilometres.
This nomadic way of life allows Little Red Flying-foxes to carry pollen between widely separated forests. Their nightly movements connect flowering trees across large areas, supporting plant reproduction and the renewal of native woodland. Their migrations are therefore not simply journeys in search of food, but an important natural process within Australia’s changing landscapes.
CULTURAL CONTEXT AND SYMBOLOGY

CONSERVATION INFORMATION.

This design donates to animal and conservation efforts
The Little Red Flying-fox remains widespread and is not currently listed as threatened under Australia’s national environmental legislation. Its ability to travel great distances allows it to respond to flowering events that shift between regions and seasons. However, this mobility also means the species depends upon a network of feeding and resting habitats spread across an enormous landscape.
Clearing of flowering forests can remove important food resources along traditional movement routes. When several feeding areas disappear, flying-foxes may be forced to travel farther, use less suitable habitat or gather near towns where food remains available. Drought, fire and failed flowering seasons can increase these pressures by reducing nectar supplies across whole regions.
Landscape-scale conservation is therefore essential. Protecting flowering trees, maintaining forest corridors and preserving a network of safe camps allow colonies to continue following seasonal food. These measures also safeguard the long-distance pollination performed by flying-foxes, supporting the regeneration and genetic health of native forests well beyond the animals’ daytime roosts.
