The Crimson Mane celebrates the remarkable scale and luminous beauty of one of the world's largest jellyfish. Suspended within the deep blue expanse of the open ocean, a solitary Lion's Mane Jellyfish drifts beneath a softly illuminated surface, its broad amber bell glowing like a suspended lantern beneath descending shafts of sunlight. Rich tones of copper, crimson, burnt orange, and translucent rose blend across the bell, creating a striking contrast against the cool sapphire waters surrounding it.
Flowing beneath the bell is an intricate curtain of trailing tentacles and finely textured oral arms that extend gracefully through the water in delicate ribbons. Their gentle curves create a remarkable sense of movement, while tiny silvery fish weave confidently among the drifting strands, adding both scale and life to the composition. The surrounding ocean remains open and uncluttered, allowing the immense jellyfish to dominate the scene through elegance rather than motion.
Soft beams of filtered sunlight illuminate the upper water column while the deeper ocean fades into darker blue below, creating a sense of depth and quiet grandeur. The Lion's Mane Jellyfish (Cyanea species)
Includes some of the largest jellyfish known, inhabiting the cool temperate and polar waters of the North Atlantic, North Pacific, Arctic Ocean, and parts of the Southern Hemisphere. Larger individuals may develop bells exceeding two metres in diameter, while the longest tentacles recorded among the largest specimens can extend for more than thirty metres, making them among the longest animals on Earth.
Rather than actively pursuing prey, Lion's Mane Jellyfish drift with ocean currents while rhythmically pulsing their bell to maintain position within the water column. Their countless tentacles carry specialised stinging cells used to capture fish, zooplankton, crustaceans, and smaller jellyfish. Despite this formidable defence, numerous juvenile fish and small invertebrates are able to live among the tentacles, finding protection from larger predators while carefully avoiding the stinging cells.
In this way, a single Lion's Mane Jellyfish becomes far more than an individual animal. It functions as a drifting microhabitat that supports a diverse community of marine life, illustrating how even seemingly solitary ocean drifters contribute to the complexity and interconnectedness of pelagic ecosystems.

Climate change is altering the distribution of many cold-water marine species, including jellyfish.
