The Canyon Keeper celebrates the enduring relationship between one of Australia's most ancient reptiles and the timeless river gorges of the north. Resting quietly in the shallow waters of a crystal-clear pool, the Freshwater Crocodile lies at ease beneath towering sandstone cliffs that glow in the first light of morning. Its streamlined body mirrors the warm colours of the surrounding rocks, while gentle ripples spread across the water's surface, reflecting both the reptile and the rugged canyon beyond. Fine mist lingers above the river as shafts of sunlight filter through the gorge, lending the landscape a quiet sense of age and permanence.
The immense scale of the canyon provides a dramatic backdrop to the calm presence of the crocodile, emphasising the close connection between animal and environment. The Freshwater Crocodile (Crocodylus johnstoni)
The Freshwater Crocodile is closely associated with the rivers, billabongs, sandstone gorges, and permanent freshwater pools of northern Australia. Unlike its larger relative, the Saltwater Crocodile, this species is generally less territorial and often shares suitable waterways with other freshwater crocodiles, particularly during the dry season when permanent water becomes limited. Individuals may be seen basking together along riverbanks or resting within the same pools, reflecting a more tolerant social behaviour.
Many of Australia's most spectacular inland waterways, including those of the Kimberley, Kakadu, and Nitmiluk regions, provide ideal refuge throughout the year. These ancient river systems retain water long after seasonal floods have receded, supporting stable crocodile populations alongside fish, turtles, waterbirds, and countless aquatic invertebrates. The Freshwater Crocodile has occupied these landscapes for millions of years, becoming an integral part of the ecological balance within northern Australia's freshwater ecosystems.

The Freshwater Crocodile remains widespread throughout northern Australia and is currently classified as Least Concern. Extensive protected areas, legal protection, and the remoteness of much of its habitat have enabled healthy populations to persist across Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and northern Queensland.
Although the species is secure overall, local threats remain. Habitat disturbance, accidental entanglement in fishing equipment, nest disturbance, and reduced water quality can affect breeding success in some regions. One of the most significant modern threats is the invasive Cane Toad (Rhinella marina). Young crocodiles may die after attempting to consume these toxic amphibians, reducing recruitment in affected waterways. Continued monitoring of river systems, protection of nesting habitat, and control of invasive species help ensure that the Freshwater Crocodile remains an enduring component of Australia's northern freshwater ecosystems.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
