The Barnyard Sanctuary is an intimate portrait of warmth, protection, and the quiet bond shared between a Dutch Warmblood mare and her remarkable twin foals. Resting together upon a deep bed of golden straw, the family is surrounded by the timeless character of a traditional timber barn, where weathered beams, stacked hay, and softly filtered daylight create an atmosphere of peace and security. The mare's gentle posture and attentive gaze reflect her protective nature, while the two foals lie contentedly beside her, their relaxed forms conveying trust and complete comfort within the shelter of their mother's presence. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Dutch Warmblood (Equus ferus caballus) the first hours following birth represent one of the most critical stages in a foal's development. Healthy foals instinctively attempt to stand within a relatively short period after birth before locating their mother's milk, which provides nutrient-rich colostrum containing antibodies essential for establishing early immunity. This brief window plays a vital role in protecting the newborn against infectious disease during its earliest weeks of life.
Equally important is the rapid formation of the maternal bond. Mares recognise their foals through scent, sound, and close physical contact, while foals quickly learn to identify their mother and respond to her movements and vocalisations. During this period, the mare provides both nourishment and reassurance, guiding the foals as they gain strength, coordination, and confidence within their surroundings. In the uncommon circumstance of raising twins, this delicate balance requires additional maternal energy and attentive management to ensure both foals thrive. These earliest interactions establish the behavioural foundations that support healthy development throughout the horse's life.
