Safe in the Canopy captures a quiet moment of trust high above the forest floor as a mother koala carries her growing joey through the branches of a towering eucalyptus. Warm sunlight filters gently through the surrounding leaves, illuminating their soft grey coats while layers of woodland stretch into the distance in a haze of golden light. The joey clings securely to its mother's back, peering curiously towards the viewer as the pair continue their careful climb.
The vertical composition emphasises both the height of the eucalyptus forest and the security found within its branches. The Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus)
The bond between a mother koala and her joey represents one of the most important stages in the species' life cycle. After leaving the pouch, the young animal spends many months riding on its mother's back as she moves between feeding trees throughout her home range. During this period the joey gradually learns which eucalyptus species provide the greatest nutritional value, how to climb safely through the canopy and how to recognise the boundaries of suitable habitat.
This prolonged period of learning gives young koalas the knowledge and experience required to survive independently. The success of each generation therefore depends not only on maternal care but also on the continued availability of mature forests that support every stage of their development.

The future of koalas depends upon protecting the forests where breeding, raising young and dispersal all take place. Female koalas require secure home ranges containing mature food trees, while growing joeys need connected habitat as they gradually establish territories of their own.
Habitat loss, disease, drought and increasingly severe bushfires continue to reduce the availability of these critical environments across much of eastern Australia. Conservation organisations are working to restore degraded forests, improve habitat connectivity, rehabilitate injured animals and monitor breeding populations over the long term. These coordinated efforts aim to ensure future generations of koalas continue to thrive within Australia's eucalyptus landscapes.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
