Mountain Jewels reveals a hidden burst of colour within the cool mountain forests of eastern Australia, where Crimson Rosellas move quietly among flowering eucalyptus beneath towering gums and ancient tree ferns. In the foreground, a mature rosella perches confidently upon a weathered branch draped with peeling bark and moss, its brilliant crimson plumage and deep cobalt wings glowing against the subdued greens and silvery light of the woodland. Nearby, other birds feed among fresh blossoms as shafts of morning sunlight filter gently through the canopy, illuminating drifting mist and creating an atmosphere of calm discovery.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Crimson Rosella (Platycercus elegans)
The Crimson Rosella is one of Australia's most recognisable native parrots, occurring throughout the forests and mountain ranges of eastern and south-eastern Australia. Although frequently seen in parks and gardens, its natural stronghold lies within cool eucalyptus forests, rainforest margins, and fern-filled gullies where mature trees provide both food and nesting hollows.
Adult birds are renowned for their brilliant crimson plumage contrasted by rich blue wings and tail, while juveniles spend their early years clothed predominantly in green before gradually developing their distinctive adult colours. Crimson Rosellas feed on seeds, fruits, blossoms, berries, and insects, foraging from the forest floor to the canopy throughout the day. Generally less nomadic than many Australian parrots, they often remain within established territories, forming strong pair bonds and filling the forest with their clear, musical whistles.

The Crimson Rosella remains widespread and secure across most of its mainland range, occupying forests, woodlands, and many urban green spaces. However, not every population shares the same outlook. The Kangaroo Island Crimson Rosella (Platycercus elegans melanopterus) is listed as Vulnerable following substantial habitat loss caused by the devastating 2019–2020 bushfires.
Like many Australian parrots, Crimson Rosellas rely on mature hollow-bearing trees for breeding, making the protection of old-growth forests essential. Habitat clearing, the loss of nesting hollows, and diseases such as Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD) continue to present local challenges. Conserving native forests and supporting habitat recovery after major bushfires will help ensure these brilliant parrots remain among the most vibrant ambassadors of Australia's mountain woodlands.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
