Morning in the Ferns celebrates the gentle, watchful spirit of Australia's forest understorey. This peaceful woodland study captures a quiet moment at first light as a mother Red-necked Wallaby pauses amongst dew-laden grasses with her joey safely nestled within her pouch. Warm shafts of sunlight filter through towering eucalypts, illuminating the forest floor in ribbons of gold while moss-covered logs, delicate fern fronds, and native grasses create a richly textured foreground. The mother's alert gaze and upright posture convey both curiosity and quiet vigilance, while the tiny face peeking from the pouch adds a touching sense of tenderness and security.

The Red-necked Wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus)
Is one of Australia's most widespread and recognisable wallabies, distinguished by the warm reddish colouring across its shoulders and neck that gives the species its common name. Found throughout eastern and southeastern Australia, it occupies forests, woodlands, coastal scrub, and grassy clearings where dense vegetation provides shelter while nearby open spaces offer abundant grazing opportunities. Its adaptable nature has enabled the species to thrive across a wide variety of natural environments.
Primarily active during the cooler hours of dawn, dusk, and night, Red-necked Wallabies feed on grasses, herbs, leaves, and young shoots. Although often encountered alone or in small groups, they remain highly aware of their surroundings, relying on keen hearing, powerful hind limbs, and swift bounding movements to escape danger. Like all macropods, females nurture their young within a forward-opening pouch, where the developing joey remains protected for many months before gradually exploring the outside world.
The close relationship between mother and joey represents one of the defining stages of the wallaby's life cycle. As the young animal begins venturing from the pouch, it learns to forage, recognise shelter, and navigate the complex environments of Australia's forests and woodland edges. This artwork celebrates that enduring bond, portraying the Red-necked Wallaby as both a resilient browser and a symbol of the quiet continuity of life within Australia's bushland ecosystems.

The Red-necked Wallaby is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List and is not listed as threatened under Australia's national environmental legislation. The species remains widespread and relatively abundant across much of its natural range, occupying forests, woodland edges, coastal heathlands, scrub, and even some modified agricultural landscapes. Its adaptability has allowed healthy populations to persist throughout many regions of eastern and southeastern Australia.
Although populations are generally stable, localised pressures continue to affect some areas. Habitat fragmentation from urban expansion, road mortality, predation by introduced foxes and feral dogs, and the loss of native vegetation can reduce local population numbers. Increasing wildfire intensity and prolonged drought associated with climate change may also alter the availability of food resources and protective understorey vegetation in parts of its range.
Conservation efforts focus on maintaining connected native habitats, protecting forest and woodland ecosystems, and reducing threats through wildlife corridor projects, road-crossing initiatives, and predator management. As an important native herbivore, the Red-necked Wallaby contributes to the health of Australian ecosystems through grazing and seed dispersal, while remaining one of the country's most familiar and enduring marsupials.
