Embers of the West celebrates the quiet beauty of the Red-eared Firetail, one of Western Australia's most elusive native finches. Bathed in the first light of dawn, a pair moves gently through dew-covered sedges and flowering heath, pausing to forage among delicate seed heads as the surrounding landscape slowly awakens. Soft golden light filters through the low shrubbery, illuminating fine spider webs and tiny droplets of dew while revealing the birds' subtle olive-green plumage, finely barred underparts, and vivid crimson markings.
The intimate composition invites the viewer into a rarely witnessed corner of Australia's south-west, where dense heathlands provide shelter for an extraordinary diversity of endemic wildlife. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Red-eared Firetail (Stagonopleura oculata)
The Red-eared Firetail is found nowhere else on Earth but the south-west corner of Western Australia, where it inhabits dense coastal heathlands, sedgelands, paperbark swamps, and moist jarrah forests. Unlike many Australian finches that gather in open grasslands, this species spends much of its life concealed within thick understorey vegetation, emerging quietly to feed on the seeds of native grasses, sedges, and small shrubs.
Its understated olive-green plumage provides excellent camouflage among the surrounding foliage, while the brilliant crimson face, bill, and rump offer flashes of colour that inspired its common name. Usually encountered in pairs or small family groups, Red-eared Firetails are gentle, retiring birds whose dependence on dense native vegetation makes them excellent indicators of healthy ecosystems. Their presence reflects the unique biodiversity of Western Australia's internationally recognised biodiversity hotspot, where many plant and animal species occur nowhere else in the world.

The Red-eared Firetail is currently classified as Least Concern and remains widespread throughout suitable habitat in the south-west of Western Australia. Although its geographic range is naturally limited, populations are generally considered stable where healthy native vegetation persists.
The species relies on dense, well-connected understorey for both food and protection. Habitat clearing, fragmentation of heathlands and wetlands, altered fire regimes, invasive weeds, and prolonged drought can all reduce the quality of these specialised environments. Because Red-eared Firetails are reluctant to cross open ground, isolated patches of habitat may become increasingly difficult to recolonise over time. Conserving intact heathlands, paperbark wetlands, and appropriately managed fire mosaics is therefore essential to maintaining healthy populations. As a species found only in Western Australia, the Red-eared Firetail serves as both a symbol of the region's exceptional biodiversity and a reminder of the importance of protecting its unique native landscapes.
