PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Crimson on the Billabong celebrates the quiet elegance and unmistakable colouration of one of Australia's most familiar native snakes. Moving slowly along the edge of a mist-covered billabong, the Red-bellied Black Snake glides through shallow water as the first light of morning filters between towering eucalyptus trees. Its glossy black scales catch the warm golden sunlight with a subtle metallic sheen, while flashes of deep crimson along its lower flanks glow against the still water. With its head gently raised and tongue extended, the snake calmly samples the cool morning air as delicate ripples spread across the water's surface.
Soft mist drifting across the wetland creates a tranquil backdrop, complemented by reeds, fallen leaves, and gentle reflections beneath the trees. Warm amber light contrasts with the cool greys and greens of the flooded woodland, drawing the eye naturally towards the snake's striking colours. The composition conveys a sense of quiet balance, celebrating a species whose graceful presence has become an enduring part of Australia's freshwater landscapes.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Red-bellied Black Snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus)
The Red-bellied Black Snake is closely associated with the wetlands, rivers, swamps, and creeks of eastern Australia, where it is among the country's most accomplished aquatic snakes. A confident swimmer, it moves effortlessly through both shallow and deeper water, hunting frogs, fish, tadpoles, and small reptiles along the margins of freshwater habitats. This close relationship with waterways distinguishes it from many other Australian elapids, which spend far more time in drier environments.
Although medically significant, the species is widely regarded as having a generally calm temperament and will usually avoid confrontation when given the opportunity. Its glossy black upper body and vivid crimson underparts form one of the most recognisable colour combinations among Australian reptiles. As both predator and prey within wetland ecosystems, the Red-bellied Black Snake contributes to healthy freshwater food webs, helping regulate amphibian populations while providing food for larger predators.

CONSERVATION INFORMATION.

This design donates to animal and conservation efforts
The Red-bellied Black Snake remains widespread throughout eastern Australia and is currently classified as Least Concern. Nevertheless, the long-term health of local populations depends on the protection of freshwater habitats, including wetlands, riparian forests, swamps, and floodplain waterways that support both the snake and its amphibian prey.
One of the most significant threats in parts of its range is the spread of the invasive Cane Toad (Rhinella marina). Red-bellied Black Snakes frequently attempt to consume these toxic amphibians and may die from poisoning. Wetland drainage, declining water quality, urban expansion, and altered fire regimes can also reduce habitat quality and prey availability. Conserving healthy waterways, restoring riparian vegetation, and protecting native frog populations all contribute to the continued success of this species. As a characteristic predator of Australia's freshwater environments, the Red-bellied Black Snake remains an important indicator of thriving wetland ecosystems.
