PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Canopy at Dusk captures the moment a Black Flying-fox awakens to begin its nightly journey across the Australian landscape. Suspended beneath a broad eucalyptus branch, the animal opens its wings into the fading light, becoming the commanding focus of the composition. The warm sunset passes through the thin membranes, revealing a delicate network of veins and folds, while the rich reddish-brown fur around its shoulders glows against the deepening blue of the evening sky.
Around the central figure, the forest is already stirring. Flying-foxes sweep between the trees or hang among distant branches as the colony gradually leaves its daytime roost. Flowering eucalyptus frames the lower canopy, while tiny insects drift through the golden air like sparks. The close view of the animal contrasts with the broader movement beyond, balancing fine biological detail with the scale of the awakening camp. The scene captures the brief transition when daylight fades, the roost comes alive and thousands of nocturnal journeys begin.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Black Flying-fox (Pteropus alecto)
The Black Flying-fox is one of Australia’s largest bats, occurring across northern and eastern regions of the continent. It inhabits tropical and subtropical forests, mangroves, wetlands, coastal woodlands and urban green spaces where flowering and fruiting trees provide food. Unlike small insect-eating bats, it navigates mainly through excellent eyesight and a highly developed sense of smell rather than echolocation.
Black Flying-foxes spend daylight hours in communal camps that may contain hundreds or thousands of animals. As sunset approaches, the colony becomes increasingly active through calling, grooming, wing movements and short flights between branches. Individuals then leave the roost and may travel many kilometres in search of nectar, pollen, flowers and native fruit.
These nightly departures connect widely separated habitats. As flying-foxes move between feeding trees, they transport pollen and seeds across distances that many smaller animals cannot cover. Their evening emergence is therefore more than a daily search for food; it begins an ecological service that supports forest renewal throughout northern and eastern Australia.

The Black Flying-fox remains widespread and is not listed as threatened under Australia’s national environmental legislation. Populations occur across a broad range extending around the northern coast and south into northern New South Wales, with animals also travelling inland along permanent waterways and seasonal food routes.
Although secure overall, the species faces increasing local pressures. Clearing of flowering and fruiting forests removes feeding habitat, while the loss or disturbance of camps can reduce safe places for daytime rest. Urban expansion may also bring colonies into closer contact with people, increasing conflict over noise, odour and vegetation damage. Wildlife entanglement, vehicle strikes and severe heat events add further risks.
Conservation depends upon retaining both feeding forests and a network of suitable camps across the landscape. Protecting mature trees, managing roosts carefully and helping communities coexist with nearby colonies can reduce avoidable harm. Because Black Flying-foxes pollinate flowers and disperse seeds over long distances, safeguarding their movement also protects the natural regeneration of forests far beyond the boundaries of the roost.
