Wings of the Ocean Spray captures the effortless majesty of the White-bellied Sea-Eagle as it rides the rising air currents above Australia's dramatic coastline. Banking gracefully over turquoise waters, the eagle glides between towering sandstone cliffs and the open ocean, its immense wings catching the final golden light of the day. Sea spray rises from the waves below, while distant headlands dissolve into warm atmospheric haze, creating a landscape where sea, sky, and stone merge into a single sweeping panorama.
The bird dominates the composition with remarkable presence. White-bellied Sea-Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster)
The White-bellied Sea-Eagle is among Australia's largest birds of prey and one of the defining raptors of the nation's coastlines. Occupying estuaries, islands, rivers, mangroves, and sheltered bays, it is instantly recognised by its striking white head and body, contrasting with broad slate-grey wings that may span more than two metres. Although renowned for capturing fish from the water's surface, the species is also an adaptable hunter and scavenger, feeding on waterbirds, reptiles, carrion, and a variety of marine prey.
One of the eagle's greatest adaptations is its extraordinary ability to exploit coastal air currents. Rising thermals and ocean updrafts allow these birds to soar for long periods with minimal effort, conserving energy while surveying vast stretches of shoreline below. Their commanding flight has earned them an important place in the cultural traditions of many Indigenous Australian communities, where the Sea-Eagle is respected as a symbol of strength, vigilance, and the enduring connection between land and sea.

While the White-bellied Sea-Eagle remains secure across much of northern Australia, its southern populations are considerably more vulnerable. The species depends upon extensive, undisturbed coastlines and large mature trees or cliff ledges that provide suitable nesting sites overlooking productive waterways. Because breeding pairs often occupy the same territory for decades, the loss of even a single nesting site can have long-lasting consequences for local populations.
Human activity continues to present significant challenges. Coastal development, recreational disturbance, removal of nesting trees, marine pollution, entanglement in discarded fishing gear, and contamination of aquatic food chains can all reduce breeding success or increase adult mortality. Climate change also threatens important coastal habitats through rising sea levels and increasingly severe storm events.
Conservation programs focus on protecting breeding territories, preserving mature coastal forests, restoring estuarine ecosystems, and minimising disturbance during nesting. By safeguarding the rivers, wetlands, islands, and coastlines upon which these magnificent raptors depend, conservation efforts also benefit countless other species that share Australia's rich marine environments.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
