This unique coat results from a naturally occurring recessive genetic trait that was carefully preserved through selective breeding, establishing the Teddy as one of the most distinctive modern guinea pig breeds.
Although its coat is often compared to soft velvet or a plush toy, the Teddy Guinea Pig remains a robust and active variety with the same gentle temperament shared by other domestic guinea pigs. Breed standards place emphasis on an even, dense coat with good spring and uniform texture across the body, alongside sound conformation and overall health. While the unusual fur requires occasional brushing to remove loose hair and debris, it remains relatively easy to maintain, contributing to the breed's popularity among exhibitors and companion animal owners who appreciate its unique texture and engaging personality.
